This cam in the Darla machine la out out of a solid piece of uteei and hardened, while in the Stager it is not onlp very much lighter, bat la made of common oast Iron. The feed apparatus of the two machines are very dissimilar. That of the Singer is the usual slip feed. The Davis has the vertical feed peculiar to tteelf. In this arrangement the preoaer foot holds the material dimly down till the needle bae reached ita lowest paint. The pressure is then relieved and transmitted to the bed bar. Heed bar, needle and material are then, by a very simple contrivance, moved forward simultaneously the required length of stitch. Motion is given to the shuttle in Davis machine as follows. An eoccutrlo at the wheel end of the main spindle gives motion to a vertical lever. This in turn transmits it through a hall Joint of ingeniou construction to the only moving pert under the machine, e pivotied lever having at its end aa adjustable shuttle carrier. Having examined the mechanical arrangements of the two machines, we tested their adaptability for work, and we noticed the very peculiar feed of the Davie. In this respect we have beta forced to the conclusion that foe all purposes, sewing from the thinnest mnalln to even through a metal spoon. the Davis has no parallel tor grasp, or for avoiding that puckering often the effect of the preeoura ea a tote motion feed. We must in common honesty exprese our astonishment at the range and variety of work oooorapUahod by the Davis, which we are satisfied cannot be done by the Singer. In summarising our report, we repeat that we have bo hesitation in saying that we regard the Davis as very superior to the Singer in workmanship, material, sad the mechanical principles in vetoed, and also in performing a greater range of work.
