OVERCROWDING TRAINS.
TO THS BDIIOB. Sill, —Your artiole re overcrowding of trains between Lyttelton and Ohristohuroh, ! whioh appeared in your issue of Saturday last, has been read with gratitude by many, but I would beg to point out that yon have not gone far enough Dy drawing attention to the frequent overcrowding of certain morning trains, inasmuoh as the 10 p.m. train from Ohristohuroh on Saturdays is almost invariably overorowded— ■a notable instance of whioh was observed last Saturday, when ladies had scarcely standing room, with a lot of men on the platform. Some men had acosss to the guard's van, whioh' puts one in mind of being shoved into a horse box ; still even such accommodation. is preferable to Btanding on a platform under a dense oloud of abominable smoke, whioh is enough almost to suffocate one in a head wind. I would add that if it is dangerous to ride on the platform by day, it must be muoh more so by night. I say it is high time the public should insist on having the accommodation they are entitled to, and for whioh they pay but cannot obtain under the existing (mis) management. Would the public put up with suoh if the railways were managed by a private Company ?—I am, &0., LT'XTMLTOWAN.
