THE ENGLISHMEN IN NEW ZEALAND.

[Bt TaiiK&BArH.J [HtOX OUB OWN OOBBBSPONDBNT.] AUCKLAND, Fra. 3. The weather was excellent to-day, bat there was a strong southerly breeze, which made the bowling at the northern wicket heavy. Three thousand persons were present. The Englishmen went in shortly before 1 o’clock, Ulyett and Barlow facing Lynch and Lankham. Lynch opened the ball from the Hospital end, at which Ulyett played, and a maiden resulted. Lankham then started at the Newmarket end, and another maiden ensued. Ulyett putLynoh away, and got one single. Barlow got the same bowler to leg for a single, and in the next over put Lankham in the slips for a single, and then Lankham sent down a ball which caused Barlow to retire. Selby succeeded him. Some pretty play then ensued between Ulyett and Selby, in which Ulyett fait Lynch well to the off for four, and Lankham to leg for a like number. A ball from Lynch tempted Ulyett, and it travelled in the direction of Bobinson, who was not to be refused. Cries of “ well caught Bobinson ” from the assemblage showed the fielder to be a great favourite. Bates then came in. After tome smart batting, which brought the score up to 40, Bates and Selby played more cautiously, and runs came slowly, the Auckland team fielding well, till Lankham bowled Bates. Bates’ innings was a fine specimen of cricket. Shrewsbury succeeded him, and a grand square-leg nit for four off Lynch brought 50 up, when the adjournment for lunch took place. After lunch Bobinson took Lynch’s place and bowled against the wind. A long succession of maidens followed, only broken by a leg-hit for 2 by Selby off Bobinson, and Shrewsbury slipping Lankham for a single. Selby then drove him for 2, and retired, feeling unwell. Midwinter succeeded him. Shrewsbury put Bobinson away for 1, and Midwinter cut him for 2, and drove him for one, but the next ball he hit hard to the off, and was caught by Buokland. Sootton filled the vacancy and played the rest of the over. Shrewsbury hit Lankham well to leg. and four resulted, after which Shrewsbury and Sootton settled down to work for the remainder of the day. The Auckland captain changed the bowlers, trying Arneil, Farrar, Oox, Buokland, and Isaacs, but eventually sent back Lynch and Lankham, as no impression could be made, and only runs resulted. Both men kept in three hours and a-half. The stumps were drawn at 6 o’clock, when four wickets were down for 166 runs, Shrewsbury having made 70, and Sootton 34, both not ont. The fielding of the Auckland team was fairly good, the best being Bobinson, Buokland, Testro, Thompson, P. Dufaur, Mumford, Arneil, and Bindon. The following is the score : ALL-ENGLAND ELEVEN.
