LOOAL MAEKETS. Messrs H. Matson awd Co. report on tho live Stock market, Ac, for tho week ending Thursday, Feb. 2,1883, as follows.— Yesterday's Addihotok sale brought forward a largely increased supply of sheep, the market being the heaviest held for soma tune past. Of about 6000 sheep penned, four-flfths were fit for butchers' purposes, the quality generally being abo»e the average, and in many instances prime. Owing to the limited entry of mutton for the last few weeks, "tho trade "had only bought from "hand to mouth," and were consequently in a position to take advantage of a full market yesterday This they certainly did, for although prices were scarcely equal to last, and the previous week's quotations, yet a firm demand and good competition were shown throughout the sale, and nearly every line of fat sheep ohanged handß, either at auction or privately, at satisfactory § rices. Cross-bred wethers brought 10s to lis ed, o ewes, 9s 6d to 10s 9d; merino wethers, 7s to 7s 6d. In stores there were only a few lines yarded, and these, with one exception, were all sold. Twotooth cross-breds at 6s 6d; aged merino ewes, 2s to 2s 6d. Fat lambs were only in limited supply, and sold readily at from 7s to 9s per head. Of fat cattle there was again a bare supply, and the comparatively small entry met with a keen competition and ready olearance at further advanced rates. The best steers brought £8 to £9 per head; light weight steers and heifers,£sssto£7. The entry of store cattle was also a small one, and anything like decent lines of young stock met with a better enquiry than of late. Two to three-year-old steers are worth £4los to £5 ss; eighteen months' cattle, £3 3s to £4. Younger ages proportionate prices. For store pigs there is now a considerable demand for stubble purposes—would-be purchasers being unable to meet with any in the market. Thero is now undoubtedly a better opening for a consignment of strong stores than there has been here for the past twelve months, as there is an enormous quantity of grain shaken out by tho wind, consumption by pigs being the only means of saving it from total loss. The totals yarded for the day comprised 6030 sheep, 435 head of cattle, and 68 pigs, of which our entry included 3770 sheep, 323 fat lambs, 104 head of cattle, and 25 pigs, for Messrs John Grigg, John Deans, W. Hartnell, James Bell, Campbell and Co., H. Chamberlain, W. Goodwin, James Johns, P. Grant? George Kinley, Headerson and M'Beath, A. Parkinson, W. Fairburne, E. Clarkson, H. Mason, J. E. Brown, T. Bow, T. Bradley, G. Dickenson, George Fergusson, J. Taylor, T. Tubman, M'Guire, A. Grant, W. Morrison, W. Chaplin, John Fergusson, B. Tubman, G. Brown, V. Birdling, J. Price, and others. In fat sheep our principal sales were 120 cross-bred wethers at lis 6d, 440 merino do at 6s 9d to 7s, 200 cross-breds at 10s, 70 at Us, 78 at 10s 6d to 10s 9d, 110 cross-bred ewes at 10s 9d, 220 do at 10s, 221 at 9s to 9s 6d, 100 wethers at lis, 147 do at lis, 159 ewes at 10s 9d, 100 merino wethers at 7s 6d, 81 mixed cross-breds at 9s 6d, 330 store two-tooths at 6s 6d. 293 aged merino ewes at 2s sd. 204 store merino wethers at 4s 6d, 280 do at 6s, 120 cross-breds at 8s 3d. Fat lambs-50 at 8s 6d, 30 at 8s 6d, 20 at 8b 3d, 23at Bs9d, 60 at 8s 6d, 50 at 7s 6d, 97 atßa6dtoßs 9d, &c. Fat cattle-4 at £Blos, 3at £7 ss, 4at £7 17s Bd, 3 at £6, 2 at £8 ss, 3 at £5 15s, 5 at £6 10s. Old cows—£s to £6los. Stores—nominal. Cototbt Sales.—On Tuesday, at the Corporation Yards, we held onr usual fortnightly sale of live stock for the ABhburton district. Owing to the howling nor'-wester blowing very few farmers put in an appearance, and very little business was done, although a Rood number of sheep were yarded. We Bold 157 merino wethers at 6s Id, 109 cross-bred mixed sheep at 8a 9d to 9s, 255 merino wethers at sa, 4c, 40. In cattle wo did not succeed in placing a single head. In pigs there were very few forward, but those were sold at very low rates. Wo do not anticipate very much baeinesß in Ashbarton for some time, as the farmers will be too busy harvesting and carting their corn. On Thursday, January It, on account of the agents of Mr Thomas Ellis, we held a clearing sale and valuation of the live and dead stock, &c., on the Ashley Gorge station. Despite the unfavourable weather, there was a large attendance, and the whole of the horses, cattle and implements were disposed of at extremely satisfactory prices. Draught horses brought up to £42, young cattle £3 15s to £5 per head, acccording to age, implements correspondingly high rates. On the following day the valuation of the sheep (about 7000) was concluded, the flock being taken over by the in-going tenants Messrs Henderson and M'Beath. Privately during the week we have also disposed of 1500 merino wethers, aged sheep, at ss; and 2500 2-tooth cross-breds, at 7s 3d. Cantebbtjby Hoese Market.—Our last Saturday's sale at Tattersall's represented a somewhat smaller entry than of late, 84 horses only being submitted during the day. The class of stock on offer, however, was of a decidedly better stamp than usual, and over 40 horses of various descriptions were sold during the day. Of these about half were light active farm horses, suitable for ploughing, machine work, &c, and for which there is now considerable demand. "We do not quote much alteration in price, but young sound horses of the class before mentioned are saleable at from £ls to £22 each—heavier sorts to £3O. There is an absence of good, sorted, unbroken draught stock in the market just now, whilst the inquiry for such is I correspondingly increasing. Wool, Sheepskins, Fat, Hides ahd Tallow Export.—On Thursday, at onr Canterbury Wool Stores, we held our usual weekly sale of the above. There was a very small attendance of the trade, and for pelts a very considerable redaction in price had to bo submitted to. Pelts axe now selling at less than they were a month ago, for which wa cannot give any satisfactory reason, further than that the Utfe north-westerly weather, and the rain combined, have a tendency to destroy the pelt -for the purposes for which fellmongers are now buying them. It is therefore to the interest of butchers to see that their skins are kept under cover, as nearly every line that ware so kept sold at very muoh better values than skins equally good, hut which bad been left exposed to the weather. Our catalogue for the day consisted of 2659 sheepskins, lambskins, and pelts, 139 bags rough fat, 111 hides, and calfskins, and a few packages of tallow, everything, with the exception of a few woolly skins, being sold at quotations as under, viz:— Woolly skins, most of them held over; best cross-bred pelts, Is lOd, 2s, to 2b 6d eaoh; second quality, Is 6d to Is 8d j small and bad condition, Ib, Is 3d, to Is 5d eaoh; best merinos, Is 6d to Is 8d eaoh; others, lOd, Ib, Is 3d, to Is 5d each; lambskins, la 3d,ls 6d, Is 93,25, to 2s 4d eaoh; beat dry rough fat,2|dto 2f dperlb; second quality, 2sd, none at a less figure; salted hides, 4d per lb; green hides, 3}dperlb; damaged hides, 2Jd j calfskins, 4d per lb; tallow in packages, 2d to 2Jd per lb; do in cask, inferior samples, 14s, 16a 6d, to 19s per owt. Pbopebtt Sale.—On Saturday last wa held our usual auotion sale of property. The attendance was good, and the sale was quite a suooess. Thirteen building allotments, situate on Wilson's 1 road, and adjoining the celebrated Lancaster Park, I Ferry road, were dispesed of with the following result, eaoh seotion containing 37 perohes:—No. 65, £139; No. 64, £130; No. 63, £120; No. 62. £120; No. 59, £125; Nob. 57, 58, 60, and 61, each £125; total sale, £1125, or an average of £534 2b per acre. Privately wis have also disposed of the [ Coringa Estate of 255 aores, for Mr E. M. Templar, at £3O per acre, equal to £7650, net cash, Mr George Gatonby Stead being the purchaser. We 1 have also disposed ot a quarter-acre section of land in Battersea street, Sydenham, for £180; and sections 55 and 56, eaoh containing 37 perches, for £l3O eaoh seotion.

Messrs Kobbbi Wilkht ahd Co. report :—At the Addington Yards on Wednesday 6030 sheep and 435 head of cattle were yarded (or the week's supply. In fat sheep, there was a large entry of eood cross-breds, together with a larger supply than usual of merino wethers. The biddings were, however, very dull throughout the sale, more especially for merinos, most of which were turned ont unsold, while the demand for oross-bred stores is increasing. Pat eattle—There ww a fair supply penned, mostly good and prime sorts. Biddings for this description were animated compared to late sales, and the various lots offered found bnyers at prices a shade in advance of late rates. We sold, on acoount of various clients, prime orossbreds at lis; good do, at 0s 6d, 9s 9d and 10s ; prime merino wethers, at 7s 6d. 18 months old and 2-year-old steers and heifers, at 41s and 50s. Messrs Acljjjd, Campbell ahd Co. report on the Live Stook Market for the week ending Thursday. Feb. 2, as follows:—At the Addington Yards yesterday there was a large supply of mutton, folly more than required by the trade: 6030 sheep of all kinds being penned, about fourfilths of them being bntohers' sheep.
