MESSRS HUDSON, RIDLEY AND CO’S NEW BUILDING.

Messrs Hudson, Bidley and Co., having become possessed of a section of land in Cashel street east,; near its junction with Manchester street, have determined to erect thereon a large pile of buildings wherein to carry on the business of general merchants. Designs for the new structure have been prepared by Mr O. Peez, from whose plans wo gather the following brief description of the edifice s The building will be constructed of brick, with an iron roof, and concrete foundation. It is to bo added to the premises recently occupied by Mr J. L. Wilson, but now in the occupation of Messrs Hudson, Bidley and Co. These old premises will bo enlarged by the erection, at the back, of a two-storeyed structure, each floor of which will be 88ft by 80ft. This portion of the building is intended as a grain store, and the floor of the upper storey is to be of exceptional strength, ana supported by wooden pillars, so as to sustain the weight of a heavy load of grain. The floor of the lower storey is to be of • concrete. On the western side of the present store will bo erected a two storey building, with a frontage of 33ft and a length of 80ft. The front is to bo of stucco, of a plain but effective design. An arched gateway will give access to a covered passage about 10ft wide, running through the whole length of the building. Underneath the new structure is to be a concrete cellar, 80ft in length by 21ft wide, and 7ft in depth. This is specially designed for the storage of cheese, and is to bo fitted with proper shelves for that purpose. It will also bo thoroughly ventilated. A lift is to bo constructed, by moans of which goods con bo raised from the collar to the upper storey. The ground floor, which will be raised a few feet above the street, and to which access is to bo gained by a short flight of steps, will contain a public oflloe in the front, 15ft by 13ffc, with a private office, 12ft by 12ft, attached, and a store-room Bsft in length ond 20ft wide, with entrances from the side passage and the book. The upper floon which will extend over the front offices and the passage, is to contain one largo room 80ft long by 80ft in width. Access is given from this room to the second storey of the old premises by a door and short flight of stops. The room is lighted by moans of two skylights and by windows in the back and front of the building.
