POPULAR SPORTS ASSOCIATION

A mooting of the members of tbe Popular Sports Association was held at the City Council Chamber yesterday afternoon i present—Messrs S. P. Andrews (in tbe chair), H. E. Alport, M. Davie, F. Hobbs, J. Samuels, H. Crooks, Drewett, T. B. Lambert, and F. T. Haskins (Hon See). Messrs George Turner and James Campbell were elected members of the Association.

It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Samuels to instinct the Secretary to write to the Domain Board, asking for the «se of Hagley Fork, for the purpose of the sports. The Secretary was also instructed to write to Mr Elder, the lessee of the Pork, requesting him to remove any stock from the ground. It was decided to communicate with the Government, suggesting the desirability of closing the public offices on December 18, the anniversary of the Canterbury settlement. It was agreed to write to the various hanks asking them to 00-operate with the Committee in having the day obseived as a holidor.

Mr Drewett, on behalf of the Ground Committee, reported that the running course had been found in somewhat bod condition. The grass was being cleared away and the inequalities of the ground levelled. Mr John Anderson had promised a number of loads of cinders for the patch. Mr Andrews stated that the programme Committee recommended that the programme of last year’s sports should be adhered to, except in a few particulars. They proposed, to abolish tbe running long jump, to substitute a costume race for the lottery race, to alter the distance in the handicap bicycle race from two to three miles, to leave the tug of war open to any team of ton men, and to, introduce a Highland fling competition. The suggestions were agreed to. It was resolved to call for tenders for a brass b&nd on the day of the sports. The question of Axing the sites for booths was left to the ground Committee and the Auctioneer.

After some farther burirees of an unimportant character, it was decided on the motion of Mr Lambert, to call for tenders for printing the programmes. The meeting then adjourned till 4 p.m. on Tuesday next.
