He replied that it was all “ gammon ** ; he had only said so to frighten people. Ho said, there was no fear, and if anything took place he would let witness know. Witness had heard of prisoner using similar threats to Mr Oockbum, and hod seen it in the papers that ho had nsed threatening language at Parihaka. He bad reason to fear from these threats that prisoner would carry them out. He desired that prisoner should be bound over. It would be safer for the place. A. W. Budge, Manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Mania, gave corroborative evidence. He did not think prisoner spoke in joke, nor was he intoxicated, Ho spoke in broken English. The exact words were: “I will burn this whard, and kill the women and children," Henry Oockbnrn gave corroborative evidence. Titokowam was sober, and threatened to barn Mania down. Sub-inspector -Northcroft (Armed Constabulary) deposed to prisoner, since he was arrested, saying : “Do you think my people will run away? Do you put those children aa our guard, to take charge of us ? Have those white people forgotten To Ngatu Ote Manu and Mioturoa? This is your day. My day is coming. Do you suppose tho white people are a noble race ? ” When Titokowam spoke of these places, witness understood him to refer to the Native victories at those places. Prisoner wait then called on to show cause why he should not be bound over. Ho said: “ I know nothing about it.” Titokowam was ordered to find two sureties of £SOO to keep the peace for twelve months, and to be detained in gaol till they were found.
