LITILB RIVER RACES. These races were held on the township reserve on Monday last.. The weather was cold but dry, arid as it was Queen’s Birthday, a good number of pleasure seekers were present. These races on the whole are improving each year, and becoming very popular. There is one matter, however, about which there are a good many complaints, and which, too, was mentioned by us last year, the apathy displayed by the stewards, who thought more of their own enjoyment than attending to their other duties. Fault was also found with the delay between each race. Had they been run smartly the whole programme could easily have been disposed of in one day, instead of prolonging them into a second. The Maiden Huedlb Race of 10 sovs, for .district horses. Entrance, £1; distance, •H miles. Mr Robin son’s Kaiapoi 1 Mr Green’s Jack ... ... 2 Mr MoorsNead’s Pineapple ... ... . ... ... 3 Mr D. Grant’s Loehness, Mr Olphert’s Tout, and Mr Sheenan’s Tarewa also ran. Mr- Crocker’s Simpleton was scratched. Kaiapoi won easily, Jack a good second. Jack’s rider raised a protest against Kaiapoi, which was afterwards withdrawn. Handicap Hubdle Race of 15 sdvs ; distance, about 2 miles. Mr W. Angus’Robin Hood ... wo. Mr Sheenaa’s Tarewa did not run, and Mr Grant’s Tyro was scratched. This race caused some disappointment, as a good race was expected between the two horses. Publicans’ Purse of £lO 5 distance, 1| miles. Mr Lxnm’s Titokowaru ... 1 Mr Sheenan’s Tarewa... ... ... ... . ....2 Mr Castle’s Malvina, Mr Crocker’s Minnie, Mr Grant’s Lochness, and Mr Shadbolt’s Blue Ribbon also ran. This brought six horses to the post, A good race ensued between Titokowaru and Tarewa, Tito eventually winning. Waibbwa Handicap of 20 sovs 5 distance, 2 miles. Mr Shadbolt’a Eclat J Mr Lunn’s Marie Antoinette ... —2 Mr Angus’ Johnny, Mr Castle’s Symphony, and Mr M'Oausland’s O, auge Peel also ran. This was a splendid race. Marie Antoinette and Eclat ran a dead heat In the second heat both horses were again close together, Ec’at winning by about a head. Robin Hood, Tarewa, and Titokowaru were scratched. Consolation Race, for all horses which did not win a race.—Four horses started, and after a good race Mr M'Oausland’s Orange Peel came in first. Hack Race. —Eleven horses were entered.
