ASHBURTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Council was held on Monday evening, last; present —His Worship the Mayor, Councillors Friendlander, D, Williamson, G. Parkin/andiitHill. , , MAYOB'S STATEMENT. 1 The Mayor said that in accordance with the | resolution passed at last meeting of the \ Council, tenders had been called for carrying i out the proposed water scheme, and it would < be necessary for the Council to go into Com- i mittee on the subject. A letter fiom the ] Chairman of the .Domain Board would be ■ laid before the Council. Instructions had j been given to the Town Clerk to. take t measures to enforce the payment of all out- 1 standing rents due. to the. Council by the { cottage tenants. The following sums bad £ been received during the past fortnight:—• £ Old rates, £l7 6s; . new rates, £213 Ob 6d ; e dog collars, £22; rents, £2 16s. Prom Messrs Saunders Bros., stating that I the license for the Council to take water from f their mill race was in the hands of their * solicitor for preparation. The course was a natural, one, ; and there would be little or no expense if it was carried down this course. He hoped to be able to supply the Council, within one week, with a tracing showing the course of the creek, and also e list giving the names of all the owners of sections adjacent thereto. BOBOUGH BOLICIIOE, Councillor Friedlandor apologised for the absence of the Borough Solicitor, who had been unavoidably called away to Christchurch. He desired to say that he would have much pleasure in attending the Council at its next meeting. BY-BAWS. Councillor St. Hill asked when the by-laws would be ready, and stigmatised the delay that had taken place as very disgraceful. Councillor Friedlander promised to remind the other members of the Committee, and the matter would have their earliest attention; OBSTRUCTING THE FOOTBATHS. Councillor Bfc. Hill drew the attention of the Council to the number of packing, cases and goods which were, placed outside the premises of certain shopkeepers in, Ashburton. The members of the Council disapproved strongly of the practice of hanging out goods for Bale on the side of the shops. SUBSIDY. It was resolved to apply to the Wakanui and Lopgbeach Road Boards for prompt payment of shares of subsidies due. , , The pay-sheet was passed and the Council adjourned.
