VOLUNTEER PRIZE PRESENTATION.

The customary Volunteer battalion parades took place last evening, in the Drill-shed, and subsequently the prizes were presented which were won during the Canterbury Rifle Association competition held in January of last year. The delay in the distribution of the prizes, a number of which consisted of sums of money, has been due to the unfortunate pecuniary position of the Association, and the consequent inability of the Council to meet its engagements more speedily. The weather last evening was most unfavourable, and but few spectators were present. It was perhaps fortunate that such was the case, for bad as the weather undoubtedly was, the interior of the Drill-shed was far more dreary. At various points the rain was trickling down from the crazy roof and forming large pools on the flooring. It is hoped, however, that before the next parade, the necessary alterations and repairs will have been carried out, and the place made fairly comfortable. Major Lean stated that he had been requested, as the senior officer present, to hand over the prizes. He at once proceeded with their distribution, as follows : THE MAYOB’S CUP. Points. 1. Gunner Houston, C.Y. A 23 2. Mr Deacon 22 : 3. Mr Barnes 22 4. Mr Woodhouse 21 5. Lieut. Appleby, O.E.V 21 MB3SBS PETERSEN’S CUP. 1. Sergt. Buckley, O.E.V. 61 2. Mr Cameron 59 3. The Petersen Monthly Challenge Cup is now the absolute property of Sergeant Buckley, by whom it has been twice won; its value is £2O. The Challenge Gup, valued at £SO, has to be won twice by the same competitor before becoming his absolute property. Qr.-Master Sergeant Pox now has the possession of the Cup, and last evening he was presented with a gold medal; the second highest scorer, Mr J. B. Hunter gaining a silver medal. These medals, which are very neatly made, have been supplied by Messrs Petersen and Co. The Challenge Cup has been held as followslß72, Sergeant Gulliver; 1873, Mr Dixon; 1874, Gunner Paton; 1875, Sergeant Beattie; 1876, Mr Cameron ; 1877, Corporal Campbell; 1878, Gunner Houston j 1879, Qr.-Master Sergeant Fox.
