We publish in another column a letter from Mr Montgomery, with the more pleasure that the explanation it contains removes the only anomaly in the position he took up in his speech at Akaroa on Thursday evening, as that speech was reported. There was probably a little confusion of expression in Mr Montgomery’s remarks, for they are in our morning contemporary to the same effectas in our columns. Now however, that Mr Montgomery’s letter makes his meaning quite clear, we gladly withdraw the criticism we founded upon the passage. As Mr Montgomery does not charge the Government with “ drawing a red hen-ing” across the scent of more important on the fair conditions h 4 e lA namJS, to appear anomalous.
