HEATHCOTE VALLEY WESLEYAN CHURCH.

T ie sixth anniversary of this church was cele irated on Thursday evening last, in the dist ict schoolroom, by a tea and public meeting. The tables were provided and presided ovei by Mesdames M'Dowell, Kent, Duncan, Hm iley, Oliver, and the bachelors, who were assii ted by the Misses Duncan. M'Dowell, Ker fc, Gray, Sinclair (2), Weir, and Dixon. The Misses Marsden and Jowiss did the hon mrs for the bachelors. About 200 person! partook of the good things provided. A :ter tea the: room was re-arranged and the public meeting commenced. In the absen< eof the Re v. W. Morley, the chair was take a by Mr Chambers, of Lyttelton, who, afte • a few introductory remarks, called upon the Secretary, Mr A. Martin, jun., to read the .-eport, which showed that on last annivers iry, the debt, including interest, was £44 The proceeds of that meeting, with a few donations, realised £ls, and he (the spei ker) was very glad to inform them that Mr 3-eorge Gould, of Christchurch, came to thei • rescue, and paid the remaining £29 for thei i, which left them clear of debt (this stat ment being received by a perfect stor u of applause). Since that time it vas thought desirable to have the chu: ch removed to a more central pesi ion in the village, and a site has been obts ined, at a cost of £3O, and the church remov )d thereto, which cost £25 more. The old ite has been sold for £27, and with what cash in hand and the proceeds of the present mee ing, it was expected the debt would be rede ced to £2O.

S] eeches were delivered by the Bev. J. A. Lux brd (who also gave a recitation) and Mr A. <’. Newton. During the evening Miss Ken i presided at the harmonium, and, under the; .ble leadership of Mr Kent, the choir mat rially enlivened the proceedings by rent ering some excellent music. 0 1 the motion of the Bev. J. A. Luxford, seco ided by Mr Martin, jun., a vote of thanks was passed to the ladies who provided the tea also to the School Committee for use of sch( olroom, the choir, and chairman, after whi )h the benediction was pronounced, and a very pleasant evening brought to a cloe). The total proceeds of the meeting am< unt to nearly £l2.
