THE GOVERNOR OF NEW SOUTH WALES.
From our cable news it will be seen that Lord Augustas Loftus has been appointed Governor of New South Wales, in place of Sir H. Robinson. The following is a sketch of his career from “ Men of the Time M Loftus, Thb Right Hon. Sib Augustus WiiuiAM Fbbsbbick Spkhcbb, commonly called Lobs Augustus Loftus, the fourth son of the second Marquis of Ely, was born in 1817, and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. Entering the .diplomatic service, he became attaohS at Berlin in 1837 j paid attachd at Stuttgardt in 1844; served with the special missions at Berlin and Vienna in - 1848 ;waa appointed Secretary of Legation at Stuttgardt in 1852; was transferred to Berlin in 1853; acted as c\arg(_&ajD J***** theirs during portions of the yews 1863, loop, 1857; was appointed Envoy at Vienna m March, 1858 j was transferred to Berlin in* Deo., 1S§0; to Munich in 1862; returned to Berlin' in 1865; was accredited to the North German ( Confederation in 1868;' and ap> pointed to replace Sir Andrew Buchanan os Ambassador at St. Petersburg in July, 1871.
