BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The Board of Education for the North District of Canterbury sat yesterday l afternoon in their Board room. The following members were present: —Messrs H. R. Webb (in: the chair), A. Duncan, E. 0. J. : EAST OHBISTON.UBOH. - j A letter from the Committee of the East Christchurch school was read. It .enclosed and supported an application from the head master for an increase of his allowance for house rent. •. .. ■ , ■ , |

The Chairman explained that Mr Cornow was in receipt of a salary of £330, allowance, for rent > £6O, bonus £6O, and lor : pupil teachers £3O. The Board declined to accede to the request. . Mr Stevens asked if the decision to give no more than £SOO was unalterable.

The resignation o£ the teacher of the Amberley side school was received. The Chairman suggested that some temporary arrangement might be made for filling the vacancy. KAIAPOI. A letter from Mr. Wilson, relative to; a meeting which was to have been held to discuss the question of a mixed school was read. He asked if the Board would recognise vreolutions carried at meetings not called by the. Chairman of the School Committee. 4° answer had. been sent to the effect that the Board would take into consideration suggestions made by any public meeting.. ! j A letter from the Kaiapoi School Committee was read, suggesting a redaction of £loo|iu the head master’s salary, an increase of the. assistant master’s salary to £l6O, and; a reduction in the mistress’ salary to £7O. . i The Secretary, in reply to questions, stated that the attendance was in round numbers 90 boys, 100 girls, and 90 infants. Mr Webb remarked that he had seen: by the newspaper reports that the decision of the Committee had not been unanimous. Mr Stevens thought it would be a strange thing to effect a reduction of the salary of the head master,, which would necessitate bis giving up the appointment. The Chairman pointed out that if the school were carried out as a mixed school jthe salaries could be re-adjusted, but the Board could hot see its way to comply with the Committee’s recommendations under present circumstances.

A resolution to this effect was passed. BYDBNHAM. i - A letter from the Committee of the Sydenham School was read. It referred to the [ate report of the Inspector upon the school, and suggested alterations in' the staff and. readjustment of salaries. The proposed salaries would amount to £1648, or about £ls more than the past arrangements had cost. The average attendance is 659.

After considerable discussion the Board agreed that the salary of Mrsßowmaker should be £2OO, and that the Committee should be empowered ta advertise for a second master at a salary of £IBO. NORMAL SCHOOL. The Board sanctioned repairs to this school. EICOAETON. Tenders for the repair of the Riooarton school were opened. There were eight, and that of W.
