WELLINGTON BAOES. [By Telißqsaph.] [TIMES' SPECIAL WIRE.] WELLINGTON, Ebb. 6. The races to-day wore attended by about 8000 people, 1600 of whom were conveyed by railway, tbe rest going by road. There were no aooidtnta of importance, though some of the vehicles came to grief on the road. The boy who rode Sauntererln the Hutt Park Stakes, was thrown into the river, hie horse baring bolted. At first it was feared he was badly injured, but on examination it I was found hs was not hurt. He was picked up in an insensible state, but Hr Direr examined him and found that ho was all right. Ho soon recovered, though he narrowly escaped being drowned. There wore no other accidents. .... . , The course, owing to the want of rain, was very hard* and those who pretend to know, say that if a good shower of rata had fallen during the night the results would hare been different die day • proceedings commenced with the Maiden Plate, for which Merlin was Installed a hot favourite. Undine was next in demand. Oastileian was the only absentee, and’ the result was an easywin for the son of Blue Bov and Malice. King QuaU was. to the mrprise of all his friends, in immediate attendance. Lady Grey, Who was fancied by many, was out of it from the start, and the bookmakers, having made a good beginning.

to loy odds on the Agent for the Hurdle», tho result of which was hardlr ever in doubt. A Hack Hurdle Baoo, which sreated great excitement, was the next event, and was cleverly carried off by Porirua Eato, the favourite coming to grief at the third hurdle. The big event was next, and Laertes was still a favourite at 8 to 2. Lara, who stripped in grand form was backed by many, whilst Longfands, who was m great fettle, started second favourite. The up-country contingent wont like foen for Lara and .Diver, whilst the Mtelborouah people supported Bata. After the first mile and a half the result was never in doubt, and Ray won very easily at tho finish. The Hutt. Park Stakes was suoh a moral that nothing but Bauntorer stripped to do combat with Bribery, who had uo.dtffloulty ,iu dispbsing of her ‘ opponent. Speculation was almost nil. The only bets taken being 10 to 1 and '8 tC lon Bribery. The succeeding hack race was a wretched affair, the best horses never leaving the paddock, arid those who started did so badly that twenty lengths at least divided those who were first, from those Ikst aWay. The Flying Stakes concluded the day’s programme. This resulted in a great boil over, • Ratcatcher getting well away and winning cleverly. Bribery, who was made a great pot, was, as usual, very fractious at the post, arid disposed of her jockey once. She then got a wretched start, and although she fast overhauled the field towards the finish she oould nevergeton terms with the leaders. Tho Maibsn Plate, of 76 sove. She was not persevered with.any farther. At this period Boebaok was Black Prince’s attendant, but at the three-quarter-mile post King Quail ran into second place. ; Undine also came up, while Merlin ran into fourth place. This order was maintained to the back :of the course, when Black Prince fell back beaten. Undine ; and Merlin <theu closed on Ratcatcher, and a pretty race was run until the entry into the strught, when the leaders ran rather wide. Nolan here made a fine exhibition of horsemanship, and took the inside running and a lead of about half a length. The race after this was virtually settled, and the colt won easily. Sailor led to the entrance into the straight, when he bolted, and was not stopped until he had disposed of his rider. Passing the Stand the order was Lara, Diver, Longlands, Maritana, Laertes, Bata, Lady Grey. The leader increased his distance until the book of the course, when Maritana, who had been gradually running through her horses, collared him. Laertes modems effort at the three-quarter mile post, but soon fell back: beaten. Once Mantana was alongside all was over, for Bay had the race in hand half a mile from home, and the leading pair drew away from all but Longlands, who came through the field very fast.
