[By Telbgeaph.] [TIMES' SPECIAL WIRE.] WELLINGTON, Feb. 5. The absence of all Mr Tallance’s horses from the Dunedin general entries has caused some remarks. It appears that Mr Yallance sent an urgent telegram to the Secretary, making entries, and also sent a F.O. order. The latter was delivered in time, but not the urgent message, and so the entries were not made. The Cup betting has changed little since last night, save that Laertes has hardened a little. The Diver has risen a point, and Rata has been backed at 100 to 10. As regards to-morrow’s events, toe Maiden Plate, having seven entries, is likely to have five starters. Both King Quail and Lady Grey are looked on as non-starters. Prior to the big event neither Castillian, Roebuck, nor Black Prince were thought good enough to carry weight for age against Undine and Merton. With weight aud condition in his favour, the three-year-old should dispose of the mare; Roebuck is the best of the rest. In the Hurdle Race between the Agent and Te Whetu, as no weight will be got off their backs by not going for it, the first named should this time be victorious, and Grey Momua third. For the big event, Maritana, in spite of her penalty, has been backed a bit, and her owner considers his chance good ; Danebury and Mufti ore reported as hardly themselves and Laertes is not looked upon as more capable. It is hardly probable that this horse will be a winner at the end of two miles. Lara is in fine form as far as now, and her party is very confident she is able to win the "race, which will be run slower than last year. Longlands, who, although a sticker, is in disrepute, would without doubt have won the trophy but for his rough passage across the Straits. Even now he will run a good race. Diver is looked on as a horse certain of a place ; he is in nice form, and Walker rides. Lady Grey has never yet appeared in public, and is reported almost untrained. King Quail, although a colt, will doubtless run a good race. Some think that Sailor won’t be within 50 yards of the winner. The preference is for Lara, Diver, Laertes, and Rata, in order named. Ray on Bribery should dispose of his opponents in the Hutt Park Stakes without trouble.

Our correspondent telegraphs Since writing this evening, I learn that King Quail will start for the Maiden. Longlanda has risen considerably in the market, and is now at 4to 1. There is no other alteration in the betting. The acceptances for the Flying Stakes are : gt. lb. st. lb Maritana 9 2 Ratcatcher ... 7 5 Laertes 810 Doncaster ... 7 5 Bribery 8 4 Sailor 7 0 Otawa 7 9 Bribery is considered a moral, and there is no speculation on the event. For the Derby, final payments hare been made by Merlin, Dundee, and Barbelle. In the Calcutta sweeps to-night the following were the prices realised: —Sweep value £69 Bs. Lady Grey £1 10s, Diver £3 I.os, Lara £7, Sailor £1 10s, Danebury £1 10s, Mufti £2, Longlands £ll, Bata £5 10s, Laertes £l4, Maritana £B.
