ROAD BOARDS.

ASHBUETON. The ordinary monthly meeting. of the Board washeld on Monday last, at the Board’s office, Ashburton j present—Messrs Jno. Grigg (chairman), J. Wilson, and Joseph Hunt. The following correspondence was read:— Erom the Provincial Auditor, enclosing circular under date Jan. 17, requesting the Board’s hooks for audit.—From the same, enclosing certificate that the Board’s bools and vouchers had been duly examined and found correct for the year ending Deo, 81, 1878.—A telegram and letter from Mr E. 0. Latter, Deputy Land Tax Commissioner, were read, asking the Board to furnish him with a copy of the new Valuation 801 l for 1879. The Clerk was instructed to furnish Mr Latter with a copy* —Prom Mr E. D. Thomas, solicitor, concerning road in dispute between Messrs Butterick and Beckett. The Board decided to forward the letter to the Surveyor.—From Mr Ivess, complaining of the Surveyor’s feeling of ill* will against him, and that he did not get a fair share of the Board’s advertising for the Ashburton Mail, It was decided to request the Chairman to elicit the facts, and to reply to the letter.—The Surveyor was instructed to call tenders for shingling SO chains of new 5 a^ao to forward the dedication deed of roads on rural section 4844 to the solicitors of Mr G. H. Moore for certain alterations.— Tenders were ordered to he caUed for forming road between the river bed and Elgin road.—A letter was ordered to be written to the Upper Ashburton Boed Boaid> requesting payment of certain costs of constructing the Great South road.—The Secretary was instructed to ascertain the legal width, and if specified by law, of roads taken OT^. frc T P rivato persons by the Eoad Board. —The Surveyor laid on the table the cost of the Great South road up to Dec. 31, 1878; also, drawings showing comparative cost of a!!. 0 ! concrete culverts. It waa decided to lay these documents before a full meeting of the Board.— The pay-sheet for the month was passed.—The Board then adjourned. EYEETOK The ordinary monthly meeting of this Board was, held yesterday aftemeon; present Messrs R. Coup, Eairweather, and Hopkins. Mr Coup was elected Chairman of the Board for the ensuing year. The Chairman stated that since the last meeting Messrs Bradley* Eairweather, and Hopkins had been elected members of the Board.— Correspondence was wad—Prom Mr J. L. Wilson, Chairman of the Committee of Boad Board representatives fo'the recovery of the surplus land Fund, 1877, requesting the Board to pay its propertion of the law costs in trying to recover tno same from the Government. It was resolved to pay the Board’s shore.—From Mr J* OUivier, Auditor, respecting the audit of tno

'boot*. The Clerk stated that the books had been audited and found correct on Jan. 11. —Mr A. Weir reminded the Board that the contractors had begun the work of clearing and deepening White’s drain.—-IVom the -Secretary to the Treasury, Wellington, advising payment of £153 2s sd, being the Board's *hare of the County of Ashley land residue. —From Messrs Willis, Croft, and Co., asking for extension of time for the completion of their contract for Inglefield Creek. Granted. —Mr Bransby White here tendered his resignation as a member of the Board, which was accepted. It was resolved to have the; vacancy filled before next Board day.—An account for dog collars being received, it was decided to write to ask Mr Lance, Chairman' of the County Council, to make the appoint*, ment of Registrar of Dogs. From Mr Stedman, Registrar of the College, consenting to the embankment being made through reserve. 710, —From Mr S. Burrell offering to sell ,tho Board two acres of land at Ohoka for a public cemetery at £35 per acre.— The Surveyor’s report was then read, and tenders were opened for the works, for which they had been advertised, and one in each case was accepted.—lt was agreed that for the future the Chairman and clerk sign all cheques, and that the manager of the Bank of New Zealand be informed of this.—lt was resolved that Mr Threlield be requested to remove the gate off the bridge on the Eyre Drain Reserve. —After passing the pay-sheet •the Board adjourned. OXFORD. The usual fortnightly meeting was held at -the Road Board office on Friday, Jan. 24; •present —Messrs Sladden, Wilson, Fisher, Ferham and Pearson. Mr Sladden was voted to the chair.—Leave of absence was granted -to Mr Gorton for one month. —A petition was presented, signed by Mr Howard Rees and 43 others, requesting the Chairman to call a public meeting to urge the Government te extend the Oxford railway to Malvern, the meeting to be called this day fortnight.— Messrs Seevin and Darcey were granted an extension of six weeks for their contract of shingling Woodstock road. —The matter of the •Oarleton drain again came before the Board, and it was resolved that tenders be called for nutting the drain as far as the reserve, tenders to be called in one month’s time.—A letter was read from the Secretary to the Treasury, informing the Board that Die sum of £199 la 3d had been paid to their account at the Bank of Hew Zealand, at Oxford, being 13 per cent of the amount to the account of the Ashley County on Deo. 13, 1878.—Accounts to the amount of £512 17s lid were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned.
