HILLSBOROUGH AND OPAWA SCHOOL.
The annual picnic and distribution of prizes to . the children of the above school took place on Friday last. The company met at midday in the school grounds, and after partaking of a hearty lunoh, adjourned to a large paddock near the Opawa railway crossing, where games, races, and sports were indulged in with the greatest zest. The members of the Committee had been very energetic. in gathering subscriptions, and owing to the liberality of the residents in the district they were enabled to allot a considerable amount ) for prizes for tbo snorts, &0., and a still larger, sum for prize-bpoks. A pleasing feature in the day’s , entertainment was , the presence qf. a; considerable number of old pupilsnow young women and young men. in employment—who enjoyed themselves as heartily as did their juniors. ,iMany of the parents of the children and a number of the residents in the neighbourhood were present, ; and joined in the amusements. At 6 p.m. a' Start was made for the schoolroom, where Mk Gee had in readiness a most enticing repast ih. the shapo of tea, cake, sandwiches, fruit, &c., ito which all did ample justice. After tea Mr R. J. T. Ford, the. Chairman of Committee, distributed the prizes, .and a pleasant dayV proceedings terminated with cheers for the teachers and for those who provided the entertainment. } qChe following is a list of the principal prize-takersi I I.
