COMMERCIAL.

Lyttelton Times Office, Friday Evening. GRAIN AND PRODUCE. Very little has been doing during the week, and there is not much prospect of the initiation of new business to any extent rmtii the deliveries of grain havs fairly set in. Harvest operations have been proceeding satisfactorily, tbs weather, fortunately up to the present time, having been everything that could be deshed. "Wheat. —At the moment it is difficult to say what aae the exact market rates. Prices at the beginning of a season are exceedingly irregular, and arc generally influenced more or less by the wants of a few buyers to fulfil immediate orders, or by the pressing requirements of the millers. Both these courses, however, will not operate this year to the same extent that they have hitherto done. Extended advices from England do not report much prospect of an improvement in tone, and this is to be regretted as it is to that market we must look to work off our surplus stocks. The price given for wheat for the past two years has scarcely been warranted, and the opinion is now generally entertained that with the •dearly - bought experience of the past two seasons, prices for the future, except in an exceptional season, or from an unlooked for cause, will fce more regulated by the values ruling in the home markets. With an increasing production year by year this fact becomes more evident. Daring the week some lots of new wheat have been offered by the farmers, but as the prices asked have not met the views of buyers, few transactions can be recorded. Several lots of rather a pinched look have passed into the millers' hands at 3a. Several parcels of fine wheat have also been taken by the same buyers at 3s 3d to 3s 4d. For most of the wheat now offering, however, the growers are asking 3s 6d, but we cannot record any sales at that price. In old wheat we note the purchase of several small lots by millers, for mixing, at 3s 9d. Oats have been offering in quantity, and sales have been made at Ss for feed, and 3s 2d to 3s 3d for milling sorts, A shade over the quotation of 3s for feed has been given for lota for immediate delivery. The market is not at all decided, as Melbourne advices show low prices as ruling there, Baelet.—The prices sought by growefs cheek purchases. Several lines have been bought for local use at ss. Flora.—Trade parcels are being executed at the old quotation of £9 to £lO. Forward contracts of new have been made at considerably less money, Gbass Seed.—Eye grass is coming into the' market in such quantity that traders are not so inclined to operate. The crop is turning out much better than was anticipated, and consequently soma of the largest dealers are holding off until : rates become easier. Fairly dressed samples are - -quoted at 4s 6d to sa, and first class. 5s 6d to 6s. - Daiet PEonncE.—Batter and cheese are unaltered j the enquiry is quiet. STOCK AND STATIONS. Since our last report the weather has been fairly “favourable for harvest operations, which are nowin full swing in all parts. Of-the Province, and should ! we be favoured with a continuance of fine weather, ; - wo' may foiriy expect the bulk of the crops will be r - saved ia the course of another fortnight. . C • ‘Vo w that the harvest is well forward our farmers Are baiter able to Judge of the probable yield of thVJ reports generally are more favouranticipated. In many cases where shortness of straw, the late win assisted

in forming and filling the heads well, and in every way causing a material improvement. At Addington on Wednesday 4535 sheep and lambs, 820 cattle, 74 pigs were yarded for the week. Far Sheep were in short supply, and brbk demand. They met with a ready sob at on advance on last week’s prices of from Is to Is 31 per head. Fat Lambs were in over supply, and extremely dull of sale, many lines passing out unsold. Best lambs made 8s 6d, inferior 4s 6d. Fat Cattle were in excess of demand, and consequently a reduction in prices had to be submitted to to effect sales. We quote beet at for best quality, 23s to 25s ; inferior, 21s to 23a. Stores in forward condition are still in demand. Old cows and backward young stock are dull of sale. CUSTOMS’ REVENUE. The following was the Customs’ revenue collected
