Leave of absence was granted to His Worship the Mayor and Councillor Ovenden. COEHESPONDENCE. Letters were read from the Colonial Secretary, stating that in reference to the deductions made from the £ for £ subsidy, the Government could not refund the amount (£37) deducted, but would deduct that sum from the subsidy to the Christchurch Hospital, and give the borough credit for it. This would be done in consideration of the Council having already paid £36 6s towards relieving a patient, who would otherwise have been sent to the Hospital; at the same time informing the Council that, in future all such eases must be forwarded to the Hospital, as no allowance would be made by the Government. —A letter was read from the Inspector of Weights and Measures, intimating that he had received instructions from the Treasury Department to pay all fees received by him from the borough into the borough fund account, and requesting to know with what Bank the account was kept. Besolved—- “ That the Clerk give the requisite information.” —A circular was received from Superintendent Broham, asking that a list of all dogs registered each month might be sent to the Police at the end of each month, so as to enable them to enforce the regulations of the “ Dog Nuisance Act.” Besolved—“ That the Clerk send the necessary formas required.” FBEET EEBEEYE NO. 72. A letter was received from the General Crown Lands office, stating that the purpose for which the reserve had been made was altered from that of “ For the purposes of a ferry” to that of “ A site for public buildings other than for purposes of General Government,” and also stating that it was now available for the Borough Council offices. They also recommended that the curbing on Charles and Cookson streets be replaced where necessary. Besolved, on the motion of Councillor Moore—“ That the report be adopted, and the work recommended therein be carried out at once.” The Finance Committee reported the receipts for the past fortnight to have been—Bates, £Bl 8s 6d; kerosene licenses, 10s; dog tax, £7; E.M. Court, ss; sale of timber, £6 7s 6d; total, £95 11s. The overdraft at the bank was £407 Is 9d. Accounts amounting to £SB 16s were passed, and ordered to be paid. MISCELLANEOUS. Besolved, —“ That the Hon the Minister for Public Works be requested to forward a copy of Mr Lowe’s report on the damage done to the Borough by the river.” Carried. Councillor Moore proposed, and Councilor Mathews seconded, —“ That £l6 be paid to Mr Ellen towards Ins expenses to Wellington re damage done to the Borough by the river, through the erection of certain railway works.” Councillor Pinchin thought the charge excessive, as the late Mayor was only away from Kaiapoi from the Thursday to the Tuesday. He thought that it was not a matter of sentiment, hut simply injustice to the ratepayers to pay what he considered a very large sum. Councillors May and Parnham agreed with Councilor Pinching. Councillors Moore and Mathews both thought that considering the time and trouble spent and taken by the late Mayor, the least the Council cov’d do was to pay him what he said it had cost him in going to Wellington, without demur. Councillor Pinching said he could not vote for the resolution, so would retire. The motion was then put and carried unar’mously. The Town Clerk laid the valuation of the Borough for 1879 on the table. It showed that the total value of the assessed property in the Borough was £8254, being slightly in excess of that of last year.—The Council then adjourned.
