THE CANTERBURY ELEVEN IN VICTORIA.

[By Cable.] THE RICHMOND MATCH. [FKOSI OTJE SPECIAL COBBE3PONDBNT.J MELBOURNE, Jan. 17. The third match of the Canterbury Eleven this week was begun on the Richmond Club ground to-day. Neilson won the toss and sent his opponents in. The first two wickets fell quickly, but Manion played freely and with any amount of luck. At the luncheon adjournment he was not out with 46 to his credit, and the score at 85 for two wickets only. On resuming, Blair was immediately bowled by the younger Frith, but Manion and Thomas made matters exceedingly lively, and Neilson tried slows with good effect. Both men were caught, and the score, which had assumed gigantic proportions, steadied down. The remainder only contributed 40 between them, and the innings ceased at the very good limit of 195. The fielding and bowling of Canterbury was up to their usual Melbourne form—that is, second rate, and moreover the Richmond umpire was most unfair in his decisions. But for him, the score would not have reached 120.

Ollivier and Neilson played two fine innings for the Now Zealanders. The bowling was much worse than Canterbury’s, and Ollivier slogged it in all directions. Unfortunately, Ashby ran his captain out three minutes before time was called, and consequently four wickets are down for 111 runs.

CANTERBURY DeFbATED BY EIGHT WICKETS. [FBOH Otm SPECIAL 00BBB8F0NDENT.] MELBOURNE, Jan. 17. With the exception of Hartlond the batting of Canterbury yesterday was very poor, whilst the Bohemian bowling was really fine. Mottle’s average for his six wickets was particularly good. Canterbury making only 105 in their second innings, left their opponents the small number of 67 to get to win, which was done easily through the grand

batting o£ Eobinaon, wbo ran np 49, not out, without giving a chance. Their opponents were quite fagged and done up. Tho match was lost by eight wickets.
