AUSTRALIAN MINAHS.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE LYTTELTON TIMES. Sib, —1 am somewhat surprised to see that your correspondent “ Rustic” (it is a pity he does not give his name) is rash enough to rush into print with tho statement that Australian miuahs are garden pests, &o. It is clear to me that he does not know what he is writing about, and that ho is confounding the Australian minah with tho Indian mmah, which latter bird has been acclimatised in Victoria, is numerous about Melbourne, and is undoubtedly a fruit-eater. The Australian minah is a different bird, is innocent of all fruit-eating propensities, and is a grub, beetle, and insect feeder. Some persons, not the Acclimatisation Society, introduced the Indian min all here some months ago. I saw some opposite the Government Buildings and on the Lincoln road. It is to bo regretted that your correspondent is so ready to make a statement that is not consistent with truth.—l am, &0., J. B. HILL.
