The scores were— College, 16 and 68; Kaiapoi, 30 and l b The visitors consequently won by 31 runs. The Crops at Timarf. The copioushowers of rain that fell in South Canterburv on Monday and Tuesday last, did a great amount of good to all the standing crops, and especially to the south of Timaru, most of which are late. The pastures have been considerably improved, and feed is not likely to be so scarce during the next few months as farmers anticipated. The turnip, rape, and potato crops, which almost entirely failed, are now looking more attractive, but in a good many cases the turnip and rape seed have been so burnt up by the hot weather, that not one quarter of it is likely to germinate. Harvest operations hare been begun in the Geraldine County, and a good many fields ot oats are now in stock. Generally the yieldwill be light. Most of the crops in the southern portion of the County will gm good yields. The crops in Waimate County are exceptionally good, considering the severe drought of the past three months, and the yield will be fair. Ashburton.—Ever since their election Sept, last, the Borough Council of Ashburton have been exerting themselves towards the improvement of this town with unafcatirv vigour. The streets in the town are now beginning to look as if proper care were take:; of them, and the footpaths, which requir a great deal of attention at the present time, will shortly be taken in hand, and asphalt*.laid where required. The footpaths in the outlying streets have been cleared of tussocks in many instances, and a gang of men are constantly employed keeping the various thoroughfares in proper order. A well:: r fire prevention purposes has been sunk at the corner of East and Burnett streets, opposite Messrs Montgomery and Co.’s building an 1 the Lyttelton Times office, which will supi ly a large quantity of water, should it bo required at any time. A large number of i: - Sirtant works are being undertaken by th; ouncil, and the members deserve to be 00--Satulated on the interest they take unicipal matters.

Av Exciting Scene,—'When the James Wi-hart, which recently arrived at Auckland, was coming down the English Channel on her way to Auckland, a terrific sea broke over the vessel and did considerable damage. Amongst other things the sea broke one of the deck houses, where a quantity of gasoline and ammunition was stored. The concussion caused an explosion, and a man named Jas. Henderson was injured. The sea washed away a portion of the ignited substance, and the captain threw the remainder overboard, the others not daring to touch it. This action probably saved the ship and the live# of those on board.

A Maohi on Chinamen.—A racy and most original piece of criticism on the Chinese comes to u# through a gentleman who was a passsenger to Oamaru by the express yesterday morning, Ho was standing on the platform at Palmerston in close proximity to an intelligent looking Maori, when a dozen rather ill-looking Celestials came up, jabbering and gesticulating energetically. The Maori looked them up and down with disgust far a few moments, and turning round, his face creaking into a smile, remarked in a loud whisper, " Maori bad enough, hut them fellows ten times worscr still. Time they slopped them 'coming here.” —Norlh Otago ■Tints.
