Mr H. .Taggers proposed Mr Baunk«. Mr 8. Morton nominated Mr Andrew Kinross. Mr Shanks then intimatodtbat as he woald have sn opportunity of addressing the electors On a future occasion, he would not trouble them with any remarks. i Mr Kinross, after some introductory remarks, said the one great Imattor underlying the present contest woe the land question. One party was endeavouring to. monopolise the land, and the other to open it up for settlement. The land monopolists would have fraught forward a candidate of their own if they bad not thought there was one in the field already who met their views, i He had always done what he could to prevent land monopoly. They had to decide whether they woula elect a candidate who wished to see every man get a home of his own, and equal laws for everybddy,or one whh Would support a policy calculated to promote the creation of
an ariiteoraoy in tho Colony *'like that of England. Tho increase of Invercargill was duo to the settlement of the country, and hod the land around It' continued to ho rubs it "would only have been a miserable tillage, and working-men would have boon walking about bogging ft day’s work from the runholdcr*. Hooeruod that Sir George Groy oroaltd class legislation. Ho would support the extension of tlio franchise to females. Ho alluded to MriShanks at tho Conservative candidate. The show of hands was slightly in favour of Mr Kinross, and a poll was demanded on behalf of Mr Shanks.
MAT AURA, Jan. 0, j Tho nomination took place to-dajf ab Wniliopai. Messrs J. L. Bhanks and Andrew Kinross worn proposed. There wrt a small attendance. Both candidates profts* to support Sir G. Grey’s Government. Au opposition candidate was expected up to tho last moment, but none appeared.
