LICENSING COURTS.
EANQIOEA. 'The quarterly meeting of the Licensing Commissioners was held at the Eesident Magistrate’s Court-house on Tuesday, March 6; present —0. Whitefoord. Esq , E. M. (Chairman), A. H. Cunningham, J. C. Boys, and 8. Hey wood, Esqs. Police Repoet.—This report showed that all the houses in the district were being properly conducted except the Eangiora Boarding House. Teanspbe or License. —E. Nicholas spoiled for a permanent transfer of the license of the Eangiora Boarding house from C. Turner to himself. Applicant is at present the holder of a temporary transfer of the license. The Chairman, referring to the police report, said the house appeared to be rather poorly furnished, and it did not afford the accommodation required. Applicant said he had given up his boot-making business, and would now be ablo to attend to the house and supply the accommodation nquirod by the wine and beer license. The B?noh decided to refuse the application fora permanent transfer and extend the temporary one for a month, so that applicant might be able to make arrangements for properly complying with the Ordinance. ELLESMEEE. The quarterly meeting of Commissioners was held on Tuesday ; present—K. J. Lee, Esq. (chairman), and H. P. Hill, Esq. Police Eepoet.—The report, as furnished by the Sergeant of Police, was read by the Bench, and being found satisfactory was adopted. The license of Slee’s Selwyn Hotel was transferred from Messrs Sawtell and Co. to Poter’Qrant. ASHBURTON. The quarterly meeting of Commissioners was hold at the Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday ; present —J. Grigs, Esq. (chairman), H. T. Winter, and 8 E. Trevor, Esqs. Licenses. —George Rimer, South Eakaia, applied for a publican’s license for a house at Bar Hill. Mr Harper supported the application, and Mr Joynt opposed on behalf of the residents of the Eakaia district. The application was refused. Thomas Toppin, boarding-house keeper, Ashburton, applied for an hotel license. Mr Harper supported the application, ond produced plans of proposed additions to the present building. The license was granted, subject to the completion of the building according to plans produced —The police were instructed to inform Mr P. Tisoh, Spread Eagle Hotel, that a license would not be granted to him after June 80; also to caution Mr Harris, of the Railway Hotel, Winslow, against selling drink on Sundays.
