The Taupo was attached, this morning, by the Marshall of the Vice-Admiralty Court, at the suit of Williams, for the collision with the hulk Eli Whitney. At the inqnest held this afternoon on the loss of the two lives caosed by the collision of the Taupo with the hulk Eli Whitney, the evidence of the captain, chief mate, and carpenter of the Taupo, also of the diver who had examined the hulk, was taken, but no new light was thrown on the accident beyond what had been already telegraphed. The jury returned a verdict that Amy Davy and child came by their death by drowning through, the sinking of the hulk in consequence of a collision with the Taupo, but that no blame is attached to the captain or officers of the Taupo. The jury attached a rider to the effect that the hulk was moored in an unsafe position for vessels leaving the wharf, and that all such vessels should carry a bright light from sunset to sunrise. A meeting of clergymen was held in Knox Church yesterday for the purpose of considering the action of the Government in abolishing the appointment of Gaol Chaplain for Dunedin. It was resolved to ask the Government to re-oonsider its decision in regard to this matter, Intbeoabqill, Maroh 6. An important decision regarding the liability of shipowners was given to-day in the Besident Magistrate’s Court. It appeared from the evidence that on June 12 last a trass of goods was shipped by Messrs Boss and Glendenning at Dunedin on board the Gomerang, to be forwarded to Invercargill and consigned to plaintiffs. The Gomerang arrived at the Bluff the next day, and the plaintiffs, not receiving the goods, and finding they were lost or missing, made a claim on defendants on Aug, 20 for their valae, which was resisted, and hence the present action. The Besident Magistrate, in giving judgment, said: " 1 think the defendants were bound under their contract, as expressed in the receipt produced at the hearing, to forward the goods right through from Dunedin to Invercargill, and are responsible for safe transit, whether by rail or boat, all the way throngb. The goods are lost, and when and how there is no evidence to tell us. I think the loss shows prima facie evidence of negligence, and that defendants are liable. lam further of opinion that receipt or shipping note does not form a sufficient special contract to limit the liability of defendants, inasmuch as it does not appear to be signed either by plaintiff or the party shipping the goods. Judgment was given for plaintiffs, with costs. The defendants are Houghton and Co-, owners of the Gomerang. (ncox oub own oobbkbpondbnt.) Wellington, Maroh 6. The verdict of the Coroner’s jury, exonerating Captain Carey from blame re the Eli Whitney affair, gives general satisfaction. A curious point was raised in the Licensing Court to-day. Mr Barton, instructed by Mr Coker, of the Occidental Hotel, opposite the Theatre, appeared to oppose the granting of a license for the new Theatre Boyal Hotel, a splendid house just built at a cost of £4OOO. The chief objection was that as the block of buildings included three retail shops, one an upholsterer’s, one a tailor’s, and one a tobacconist's, no license could be granted for any part of the block. The shops are entirely distinct, and let to separate tenants, bnt the billiard room of the hotel is ever them. Technically, this forms part of the block of buildings, and Mr Barton contended this was a fatal objection under the Act. Mr Travers on the other side, urged that the Bench should interpret the words in a common sense way, and that the intention of the Legislature was not that they should apply to surh a case as this. He instanced hotels in Dunedin and Auckland with shops below thorn. The Bench took a week to consider. The prospectus of a new Theatre Company, capital £IO,OOO, was agreed to at a meeting of gentlemen interested to-day, and the prospectus will bo issued to-morrow. More than iialf the capital is subscribed, and the provisional directory is a very influential one. Mr Turnbull is to be architect, and the site is in Manners street.

Mr Travers has issued a writ, against Mr Perrier, of the New Zealand Timet, tor alleged libel in an “ Intelligent Vagrant article published on Monday. Mr T. L. Prior to the Port tram passing a number of them climbed over the school fence and got on the railway line. _ As the train approached they decamped in * body, and it was found that they bad laid stones on the railway line. None of them could be identified, but inquiries will probably be made to find out those who laid the stooea to upset the train. At the meeting of the Licensing ®e“®" held to-day, the Court decided that they would not attach any importance to memo* rials in favour of applicants, as such were not
