LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Monday, Maboh 5. The Council met at the usual hour; pro* cent—HU Worship the Mayor, Councillor! Allwright, Cunningham, Holmei, Willoox, Macdonald, and Parsons.—The receipt! for the past fortnight were reported a* haring amounted to £3 12s.—The following corns* pondenoe was read : From the Undersecretary of Crown Lands stating that the Government would agree to reserve to the Council under Clause 350 of the Act an area of 1949 acres of rural lands, which, together with the reserves already made, will make the full complement allowed by the Act, also stating that when the Council recommended the land desired, the necessary steps would be taken. The matter was left in the hands of the Estates Committee,—From Mr John Thompson applying for the situation of Foreman of Works for carrying out the water supply dutribution. It was resolved that Mr Thompson should be informed that no such appointment would be made.—From the Clerk of the Assessment Court stating that Thursday, March 8, had been fixed for hearing the objections to the -Bate Boll.— It was decided that the Borongh Solicitor should be instructed to defend the valuations.— From the Borough Solicitor, re the encroachments on the Joyce Town road.—From Mr W. Graham, asking to have the grating in front of his house in Oxford street removed to the corner of Oxford and Bipon streets. The letter was referred to the Works Committee, with power to act.—From Messrs B. Petersen and Co., asking if the Council had decided to light the town clock permanently. After discussion, it was decided, upon the motion of Councillor Allwright, seconded by Councillor Holmes, that Messrs Petersen and Go. be informed that the Council did not in-' tend lighting the clock at present.—The Inspector of Nuisances reported that Mr Miller bad taken steps to abate the nuisance complained of at the last meeting.—The Foreman of Works reported that good progress had been made with laying the water-pipes in the town, over half a mue of piping having now been laid on Norwich Quay, Canterbury, Oxford, and Dublin streets. A long discussion on this matter took place, and it was considered that the works were progressing very favourably.—The report of the Clerk of Works re the Canterbury street sewer was read.—Accounts amounting to £366 8s 6d were passed for payment.—A tender from Mr Steinson for oonerete channelling in Oxford street and kerbing was accepted. It was decided that a person should be appointed to supervise the work.—After the transaction of some other business,the Council adjourned.
