A discussion has arisen concerning the Dunedin millers’ circular intimating that they would not supply flour or other produce to any produce dealer in Dunedin who should buy from Oamaru or elsewhere, or from any one so importing. The millers, in their reply this morning to the comments made, cay: “We do not expect to monopolise the trade, neither should we be so foolish as to attempt such a thing. We assert that our action will in no way interfere with the prices of bread stuffs, for, inasmuch as there are always two to make a bargain, the purchaser can elect whether he deals with us on our terms or importsin all cases we presume choosing the latter .if 'it suits his .purpose, which must necessarily bring down ovir prices to the importing level. Admitting the force and truth of this argument, wherein lies the attempt to monopolise or the power to enforce monopoly ? We assure those few dealers to whom, when opportunity afforded, wa have been admirable conveniences, and whose nice little arrangements to their profit and our loss, for converting sacks, worth 6.i, into those worth Is, that we intend that such shall be the case no longer, but that the ordinary trade conventionalities shall be observed between us, failing which we prefer not to deal with them. The public must see that it would be impossible for us to monopolise prices as, if we wish to retain the Dunedin flour trade, we are compelled to keep the price as low or lower than the goods can be imported at from Oamaru or elsewhere; besides which, wo have to compete with the same place in the export trade, as we manufacture fully twice as much as.is required for Dunedin consumption, and, as we believe that merchants and dealers have the right to lay down to the would-be pur-

which they are prepared business, we claim the same privilege, 4> 80l Mit.th.l~4. ■> ■* liberty to deal elsewhere. /,„ 0 M DUE SPECIAL COBBBBFONDENT.) v Dunedin, March 5.
