COMMERCIAL.

Lyttelton Times Office, Saturday Evening, Tlie early part of tho week having been given up to holiday making, transactions in the import market have not been numerous. The new month has, however, opened well, and as the damage to crops is not so wide spread as was at first imagined, there is every prospect of a satisfactory business being done through the autumn. Teas have met with fair enquiry, upwards of 1000 packages ex Colibri having been placed already. Prices rule from Is 4d to 2s 3d i.b. for this teas on’s crop, but old teas are offering considerably under these rates without attracting purchasers. Sugars are in steady demand by the trade, finest whites realising up to £SO d.p., but stocks of this description are considerably reduced. Bottled ales and stout of first brands are low in stock, and command full rates. Bass’ pints are cleared out of first bauds. Prices rule at from 1 Is 3d to 12a 6d for quarts, and 8s to 9s for pints of favourite brands of ale. Guinness’ stout realises 11s to 12s 3d, and 7s 9d to 8s 3d for quarts and pints respectively ; Blood, Wolfe’s, 11a 8d to 11s 6d. Brandy meets with ready sale ; Hennesay’s bulk at 9s 6d to 9s 9d, case 335. Whiskey is firm at 5a 6d to 6a 6d, according to brands; not much business doing. Swaine Boord’s eld tom is largely held, and cannot be quitted at above 14s. Cornsacks have been in good request at 9s 6d to 10s. Kerosene—Stocks of this article are again exhausted, but we note the arrival of the Wm. Cobb at Wellington with 1650 cases for this market, which may be expected in the course of a fortnight. Galvanised iron meets with more inquiry, and realises £3l 10s to £32. Fencing wire is selling at £lßlos for No. 8; the demand limited. Cement is considerably reduced in stock, causing holders to be firm at 18s to 18s 6d. Hops have not received much attention, and we have no transactions to report. Holders show no inclination to force sales. Prime new Kents are offering at 2s 4d, and Californian at Is ICd. Clover seeds are coming into notice as the sowing season advances. Current prices for parcels are—for white and red clover, Is Id; cow grass, Is 2d; alsike, Is 4d; timothy, 9d. The Warwickshire arrived from London on Feb. 23, with a large general cargo. The Customs’ revenue collected yesterday, amounted to £1149 5s lOd. The following wore the items:—-pints, 359 J gala, £216 18s 2d; wine, 41{ galls, £8 7s 2d; ale, 2506 galls, £125; tobacco, 368 lbs, £46 ; oilmen’s stores, 503 pckgs, £167 6a 2d; Ironmongery, 19 cases, £6 16a ; tea, 10431b5, £26 Is 6d; sugar, 32,0371b5, £133 9s 9d ; cornsacks, 20 bales, £2O 8a; drapery, 62 cases, £356; apparel, 2 cases, £l2 4i; sundries, £3l 5s Id. Mr Robert Wilkin reports for the week ending March 1, as follows :—Wool—About 100 bales were cotalogued for sale to-day, bat the sale bad to be postponed through unavoidable circumstances till next Thursday, March 8 Sheepskins.—2372 pelts, 396 lambskins, and 273 full wools were submitted at my gale to-day, and all mot with ready purchasers, at a slight decline from last quotations. From causes mentioned last week, assisted by London telegrams of the February sales reporting a drop of a penny to a half-penny per pound on all sorts of wool, the prices are hardly likely to recover for a while. Cross-bred skins, large, full-woolled, Ss 4d to 6s 2d each; medium-sized ditto, 4s 9d to 5s 3d. Merinos, medium to largo, lull-wooled, 5s to 6s each; email and inferior tohaif-wo.ided medium, 3s lid to 4s 6d each. Merino Pelts, large, early shorn, Is 6d to 2s lOd each; small and inferior and late shorn ditto. Id to Is 4d each. Hides are still in good demand, and buyers for local tanning now see the folly of allowing shippers to secure all the hides, when tbe market was at its lowest, and having to come in to meet their present requirements on a rising market. About 80 heavy hides were catalogued and sold as follows: —Green, 3Jd per lb.; salted, 4d per lb. Calfskins, sound, well flayed, 6d por 16,; cut and damaged ditto, 3d per lb.
