LATTER v. BROGDEN—MR BILLING IN REPLY.
TO THE EDITOR'OF THE LYTTELTON TIMES. Sir, —With reference to an article which appeared in your paper of Jan, 27, re case of " Latter y. Brogden,” I beg to state, Ist. That I never gave a guarantee as to the carrying capacity of the Amateur. 2nd. That I never authorised anyone else, directly or indirectly, to do so. The Amateur lay in Lyttelton for eight days, open to the inspection of Mr Latter or anyone who chose to bid for her, and that was ample time to measure her held, &o. An offer of £250 was made to me by telegram from Messrs Heywood on behalf of Mr Latter, and 1 accepted it. Nothing was mentioned in these telegrams about carrying capacity. In fact, the vessel was sent to Lyttelton to be sold, and the only correspondence that took place was with regard to price. If Mr Latter still thinks he is in the right, I am perfectly willing, and have always been, to have the case heard in the proper Court. I enclose for your information copy of a letter I received from Mr Travers, solicitor to the defendants, who has authorised me to. make any use of it I may think proper in connection with your comments -on this case, lam, &0., Wellington, Jan. 31. J. BILLING.
