Tho Egmont left this morning early to pick up tho buoyed end, while the Luna went away to pick up on the White’s Bay side. They hooked tho cable three-quarters of a mile from the break, but were afraid to underrun it towards the end for fear the strong tide would take possession of them. They lowered again, and attached-a temporary cask buoy with tho idea of grappling nearer the end of the cable, tho buoy being a good guide. Just then the Egmont came up, and reported the breaking of the wire rope while attempting to get the end of the cable on board. When the Tui left, the Luna was waiting for slack water to pick up the Lyell Bay end again. The weather is fine and the glass high. , Mr Floyd, Electrician, reports that the Lyell’s Bay end of the cable was hooked and placed on board, the Egmont at 7.30 p.m., a short distance from the end which was reached by under-running, and recovered tho mushroom anchor and chains. The Luna will go out at daylight to-morrow to pick up the White’s Bay end. It is supposed that the wire rope broke through a kink. The wires arc all right. Dr Lemon goes to Lyell’s Bay to-night to take electrical tests. Dunedin, Jan. 27. The Prospectus of the Clutha Times Company is published—capital, £2OOO.
