AQUATIC.

The first two heats for the cup given by the President of the Canterbury Club were rowed on the Avon yesterday. Owing to the difficulty experienced in getting crews together, iiono of the four entered were in really good form. In several instances men’had only one or two practices for the race, and. under these -circumstances it would be very unfair to criticise their performances yesterday evening. The general opinion in the first heat was decidedly in favour of Mr Herdsoa's crew,

and this was folly justified. In the second heat there was a great diversity of opinion as to the merits of the two crews, but Mr Jones’ crew was a trifle the most in favour. Mr Grey’s crow was know to contain the most powerful oarsmen, but they were not in good condition, and therefore not expected to stay for such a long race as two miles. Bo far from this being verified, however, they not only won tho heat, but made better time than the winning orew in the first heat. Detailed results of each heat are appended. President's Cup Race ; Two miles. FIRST HEAT. Hyssus (North bank)—J. Callender, 9st 121bs (bow); H. E. Templar, list Gibs; W. S. Vincent, list Gibs; J. H. Herdson, list 31bs (stroke); C. Tho .Tyne, getting away with a smart and very powerful stroke, at once showed in front, but after going about fifty yards the Hyssus rapidly crept up, took "the lead, and off the tannery had an advantage of two lengths. After this the raee was clearly over, and the Hyssus won easily by several lengths. Time —13min 18sec. SECOND HEAT. Hyssus (North bank) —C. D. Morris, lOst, bow; T. Grierson, 12st lib; L. Ollivier, . Nearing the tannery the Hyssus commenced to draw away, and notwithstanding several plucky spurts by Jones, continued to do so all tho way. The Hyssus won by several lengths. Time—l3min.
