Dr Foster appeared to support tbe, informations, and the accrued were undefended. Some of, i-fcbe- cases for the obstruction of Gloucester street, near the Theatre, were, withdrawn by Dr-Foster, on the ground that a misunderstanding seemed to have existed among the cabmen as to the length of time they could stand near places of amusement, but in all the other, oases, which comprised plying for hire without licenses, Ac., fines were imposed. Kaxapoi Faemebs’ Club.—The special meeting of this club advertised to beheld last evening, to arrange for the annual ploughing match, was postponed until Monday evening next, out of respect to the memory of the late Mr Joseph Keetley, the wellknown local manufacturer of ploughs, a valued member of the club, whose funeral took place in the afternoon. The funeral service, which was conducted by the Bov Hi B. Oarlyon, incumbent of Eaiapoi, partly at the English church and pertly at the cemetery, was attended by a large number of members of the Farmers’ Club and of the general public. Yoiuntebe Bbsebtb Oobfs.—A general meeting of members. was . held at. Warnerfe Hotel yesterday evening, Captain Boss in tip chair. It was proposed by -Captain Bird, seconded by Mr B. P. Croabie, and “That a ust be left with Mr Warner for signatures of persons wishing to join.” It was the general opinion that it would not be advisable to send in the usual requisition to the Officer Commanding the district,, until .the Company had on the roll a much larger, number than, the regulation minimum (37) required to form a corps. There are already more than that number on the list.

Hals well Obioket Club.— A meeting of .the member* of the above dab was held at Sutherland’s Junction Hotel, on Saturday evening last. Mr T. J. Kennedy was voted jto the chair. Messrs Streeter, Wiokens, Blowers, Weight,and E, J. Kennedy were elected as .a committee for the porpoise of securing a suitable ground for the forthcoming season. Seven new members were elected. Messrs W. Streeter and T. J. Kennedy were elected to the offices of treasurer and secretary. The usual vote of thanks to the chairman concluded the meeting. Concert. —The ooneert in aid of the building fond at S. Paul’s Presbyterian. Church, under the oonductorship of Mr Clark and Mrs Long, organist of the church, which took place at the Oddfellows’ Hall last night, was a complete success; and those who were present enjoyed a musical treat. In addition to the Si Paul’s choir, who sang some choruses in excellent style, songs and duets were given by Messrs Carder, Clark, and Long, Mrs Long, Misses Calvert, Capes, and Cox. Miss L. Taylor delighted the audience 1 with her performances on the concertina Mrs Long presided at the. piano during the evening, and accompanied the songs and instrumental music. Christchurch Horticultural Society. : —The monthly meeting of members was held at the Clarendon Hotel last night, Mr Crooks : in the chair. The prize schedule for the ! ensuing season, as drawn up by the sub-: committee, was read, and with some slight; alterations approved. It was resolved that! in addition to the usual shows, two others should be .held in connection with the monthly' meetings of October and January, and a third for chrysanthemums about the end of April.' The following extra prizes were announced:— : By M r Wallace, £1 Is, for eighteen zinias ; 10s 6d for twelve quilled asters; and 10s 6d for asters not quilled; by a subscriber, 12s and 9s for six dishes of fruit at the autumn show.; by Mr. Hi Crooks, 10s 6d for the best collection of fruit at the same show; by,Mr Leigh, 20s and 10s for eighteen roses, amateurs only, at the Bose Show; by Mr T. The meeting then adjourned until June 17, when it is hoped that all matters connected with the new schedule will be completed. Fatal Accident.—An accident which resulted in the death of Mr N. Q. Glassford, of the Bank of New South Wales, occurred in Oxford Terrace last night. Mr Glassford, with Dr Ned will and Mr Beginald Foster, had been out rabbit shooting in theafternoon, andreturned to town about 7 o’clock in a pairhorse buggy drived by Mr Foster.. The party proceeded to. the .residence of D.r Ned will, In Oxford Terrace, where Dr. Nedwill and Mr Foster alighted. Mr Glassford then started to driye the buggy back to MUlett and Saunders’ stables, wherie it had been hired; with the object of getting one of the men to drive him home, and return with the buggy. Mr Cassidy, coach driver oh the .West Coast rood, saw Me Glassford driving along Oxford .Terrape/Jnnur.;Worcester street,! where the Hoiyes seemed to shy, and increase their page, one. Atf, them ; cantering. Mr Glassford ,at „_thie__ .tiine . jappeared to have ho ld of the reins too far back and. thus .had Uttle’ pr no command over his. Horses. Shortly'afterwards Mr Clark, aerated-water manufacturer, and Mr Deafsley, basketmaker, who reside at the corner, on the terrace, hear Gloucester street, heard horses galloping and a fall on the roadway, and at once ran .out to see. what it, was.. After looking about for a moment they found Mr Glassford lying on his back in the roadway, quite insensible. Having obtained assistance they conveyed him to the Clarendon Hotel, where it was found that the back of his head was oomplptely shattered. Br Symes, who had in the meantime, been sent for, was early in attendance, but Jus Services were of no avail. Mr Glassford Shared for a short time with, out showing any eigne of consciousness and then expired. The horses Had in the meantime made for Millett and Saunders’ stable, where they arrived, at a smart pace, and, rnnnmgjOgainst the building, broke the poljs of the buggy, but were secured before further damage could be done. It is pre-. Burned that Mr Glassford was jerked from his seat, and fell backwards on to his head, where ho was subsequently found. He leaves ■ a wife and three or four young children, and was highly respected by a large circle of friends, more especially in aquatic circles.: He had for, many years been a prominent supporter of boating in Chratoburcn, and at the time of his death was Commodore of the Union Bowmg Olnb, He acted as coach to the Christchurch crew which won the luterprovinoial Race at Wellington, and was ever willing to give his assistance in anything connected with aquatic a-r usements. He was also a very prominent, and active member of the Poultry Association.
