KAIAPOI BOROUGH COUNCIL.

: s Tuesday, June 1, The Council met at the usual hpur for .the transaction' 6f their Quinary fortnightly business: Present—His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Wearing, Parnham, Blackwell, «M‘Donald, Beharrell, Fnnston, and Porter, . The statement of accounts, . laid upon the table by the Clerk, showed that; the receipts during the fortnight had been—From rents, £4 125.9 d; Magistrate’s Court fines, £6 10s; sale of stone, 15s ; total, £lll7s9d; credit balance at Bank, £129.

Councillor Wearing handed in the report of the Pubho_Works committee, which, stated that after inspecting the various streets in the Borough, the committee recommended that tenders be invited for the supply of 350 yards of shingle, to be deposited on certain streets named m the report. : On the motion of Councillor Blackwell, seconded by. Councillor Beharrell, the report was adopted. ’ ■ Councillor Wearing said, with regard to Mr 'Birch’s request for a drain from Cass Street to the river through private property, the Works committee hod inspected the street, and provided other means for freeing it from storm water. The side channels in Jones street had been cleaned, and the culvert at the Sewell street crossing bad been taken up and' phtrdown again on a proper level. Stonn water could not now collect in Cass street; and the committee saw no necessity for incurring large expenditure to drain private property when the funds of the Council were so low, fnd.so many more important works required attention. After some difmission, during which the Clerk pointed but that after paying the accounts that would, be passed that evening, the Council would bnly have about £SQ to credit, it was resolved, on the motion of Councillor Wearing, seconded by Councillor Parnham—“That the receipt of Mr Birch’s letter be acknowledged, and that he be informed the street drainage of Cass street is at present Sufficient to carry off all storm water, and that the Council have no funds at disposal at present,for carrying out a new line of drain* ago.” ' Accounts amounting to £74 6s 2d were passed for payment. Councillor Blackwell moved the following notice of motion standing in his name— 11 That a rate of one ihilling in the £be made and levied on all property in the Borough, as per ratepayers’ list 1875 and 1876; said rate to be payable on July 1.” Councillor Porter seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously.
