THE ACT TO ABOLISH IMPRISONMENT FOR DEBT.
TO THB EDITOR OF THE LYTTELTON TOTE. Sib. —Would you kindly insert a few remarks regarding the above Act ? A short time back I contracted a small debt of £2 lOi, and became unable to pay according to promise. I - was summoned, and I consented to judgment; but, owing to illness in my family, and being laid up myself, I was unable to discharge it. But, three weeks since, I got employment ha the country, but during the three week* I managed to make five days’ work on account of bad weather, so I came to town with my five days’ earnings to a wife and family of six, but I was not allowed to proceed far. I was arrested. I asked to bo allowed to go home in company with tfao bailiff, to get something to eat and a change .of clothes, which was refused; so a cab wot called; I was driven to 'an hotel, supper ordered for two, beds for two, breakfasto for two, fares to Port for two, and I find it is all added to my little bill, which brings the sum total up to £5 9i 2d, which sum 1 have either got to pay or stay here three weeks. By inserting the above remarks it might enlighten others on the subject, who might be in a similar position. Your obedient servant, A DEBTOR IN LYTTELTON GAOL.
