KAIAPOI WESLEYAN SCHOOL.
A special meeting of the Managing Committee of the Kaiapoi Wesleyan day school was held in the vestry of the church, on Wednesday evening last. The Rev. R. Bavin occupied the chair, and there was a good attendance of members present. The Chairman, in opening the proceedings, stated that he had called the present meeting at the request of the teacher, Mr W. H. Wake, who was desirous that measures should at once be taken to have the Borough of Kaiapoi formed into an educational district, believing, as he did, that the change would be beneficial to all parties interested. It now remained for those present to say whether it was desirable that the wish of the teacher should be complied with. On the motion of Mr E. A. Look, seconded by Mr Ellis, it was resolved that Mr Wake’s request be granted. A discussion then took place respecting the income likely to he at the disposal of the school committee. Several clauses in the new Education Ordinance, 1871, were then explained by the Chairman, and commented on ay several members. Mr Ellis proposed the following resolution : —“ That in the opinion of this committee, it is of the utmost importance that the Borough of Kaiapoi should be brought under the provisions of the Educational Ordinance, 1871, and they deem it desirable that immediate steps should be taken to bring the same into effect.”
The motion was seconded by Mr E. Bate, and carried unanimously. Mr J. W. Ellen moved—" That to secure the carrying out of the first resolution it is expedient that the Mayor of Kaiapoi be requested to call a public meeting of the householder* of the borough and district, at an early date, to discuss the same.” Mr Lock seconded the resolution, and it was carried. The following resolution was proposed by Mr E. Bate, seconded by Mr T. Bates, and carried unanimously—“ That the chairman of the committee be requested to communicate the foregoing resolutions to the committee of the Church of England school, through its chairman, informing them of our wish, to cooperate with that committee in this important business.” The following interesting particulars, compiled from reliable authority, were laid before the committee during the evening, for their information.
Under the present educational system in force in the borough of Kaiapoi, the following amounts are received from all sources: — Church of England school f ees for 1871, £165; grant from Board of Education to same, £100; total, £265. Wesleyan school fees for 1871, £92 10s; grant from Board of Education to same, £93 10s ; total, £lB5. Total receipts of both schools, £450 per annum. Under the Education Ordinance, 1871, the following approximate income would be forthcoming : House tax, £350; poll tax, £IOO amount of Government grant, £250; total, £7OO, as against £450 by the present system. The benediction was pronounced, after which the meeting adjourned.
