THE REASON WHY.

TO THB EDITOR OF THE LYTTELTON TIKES i Sib,— As no explanation has boon yoluntcered to the enquiry, why the Australian mails, perTararua, wore not forwarded, over-, land from Hokitika, it is reasonable, to assume .that none can be given.

I pointed out in my last that tht Ooneerice would be the arrival of thdso mails o days late—to the great annoyance and inconvenience of every one interested. It turns out, however, that, instead of three, it was five days—longer than the voyage from Australia! The letters, instead of arriving at Christchurch on Saturday, the 16th, did not do so till late on Thursday, the 20th, and, as the steamer left the same evening, the ’‘course of post ” for replies was lost. Now, I ask, if this is not disgraceful. Ido hot say to whom, for I do not know.

I am told that, Hokitika not being in the province of Canterbury, the officials there are not subordinate or responsible to the poetmaster hove, and that, therefore, no blame can attach to the latter. But, surely, he can and should remonstrate against this oft-recurring, discreditable negligence and injustice to the Christchurch community ? Perhaps, he has; but, if so, and there is no redress, where is the use of our having a member of the Cabinet residing in our midst? Is it not a great nuisance having our correspondence so wantonly delayed and interrupted, simply, os it appears, because it is nobody’s business to apply the remedy P Your obedient servant, MERCATOR.
