At the half-yearly meeting of the Xew Zealand Insurance Company, a dividend of 10 per cent was declared; £15,000 was carried to

the reinsurance fund, and £2167 was carried forward to the next half year.

At aynecting of blacksmiths it was resolved to demand the nine hours’ system throughout the trade. Ten hours is the rule in some shops. An English company has offered to construct a railway from Point Russell to the Thames. The offer has been forwarded to the Minister of Public Works. The terms are kept secret. The prospectus of the South British Fire and Marine Insurance Company has been issued. Capital, £50,000 in 25,000 shares. The liability is to be unlimited, and the shares will be allotted as follows: One-fourth to Auckland, one-fourth to Dunedin, three-six-teenths to Christchurch, one-eighth to Wellington, and three-sixteenths between Nelson, Wanganui, and Napier. The company is intended as a sister institution to the New Zealand Insurance Company. All the Auckland shares have been applied for. The share market is pretty brisk: Bright Smile, 22s 6d to 255; Golden Calf, 36s to 375; Inverness, 15s; Caledonian, £l7; Thames, £5 15s; Tookeys, £8; Bismarck, £5 10s ; Moanatairi, £5 2s 6d. Wanganui, June 20. Later news states that it is the schooner Kate and not the Florence that is beached. A meeting is convened for the purpose of equipping a prospecting party to Tuhua. At auction, wines and spirits, in bond, sold as follows: —Port wine, 5s to 13s per gallon ; sherry, 6s to 13s ; old tom, lls in case ; ginger wine, 19s to £1 per case. Mr O’Connor yesterday withdrew his action for conspiracy against the members of the Provincial Council. He held a meeting on Monday night, at which he made various statements for the purpose of showing that the evidence taken before a select committee was garbled, and himself unjustly treated. A motion was proposed to memorialise the Government to make further enquiry. Mr Luckie supported the motion, as it would produce further evidence to confirm the action of the Council and the Select Committee. He declared that the evidence was faithfully taken and that the report was justified. He protested against Mr O’Connor holding a meeting while the action was still pending. Mr Reid followed in the same strain. The motion was agreed to. Mr O’Connor has relinquished the Westport land, and got back the money. Port Chalmers, June 20. Sailed to-night—Parana, for Lyttelton, with part cargo Mauritius sugar. Invercargill, June 20.

A sealing party has just returned from the West Coast t# Riverton. They report that on April 17, at Looking-glass Bay, they saw some traces of wreck, pieces of kauri and red pine boards, and broken cases, between Caswell and Thompson Sounds. They also found part of a vessel’s bowsprit, large quantities of ship’s planking, broken cases, aud pieces of boats. The sea being smooth and clear, they discovered, in two fathoms water, some books and papers; they recovered two bundles of papers, old files ; Illustrated Family Bible, a pair of bead-worked carpet slippers, a broken writing desk, and a cheque book, bearing date November, 1871. They examined •very nook and corner in that locality for castaways. Some of the papers appear to be invoices of goods supplied to Whitmore, of Grey mouth.
