LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Monday, Mabch 7. The Council met at the usual hour. Present—Councillors Bunker, Grubb, Young, Graham, Chalmers, his Worship the Mayor presiding. . The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

The following correspondence was read . Prom Mr Naldef, accepting the office of Borough Solicitor. From Mr Belgrave, asking the Council to repair the footpath near his hotel. The Mayor was instructed to place the seal on the appointment of the Borough Solicitor. Mrßelgrave’s application was considered, and after a short discussion, the matter was left to the Works Committee to attend to. His Worship drew the attention of the Councillors to the dangerous state of the footpath near Mr Dransfield’s Hotel, on London street, the retaining wall which had been built had given way.. Councillor Chalmers considered that for the public safety, the whole of the dangerous places in London street should be blocked up. After a short discussion, Councillor Chalmers moved, Councillor Grubb seconded, and it was resolved— (c That the owners and lessees of properties in London street be called upon to fence in the dangerous part of their .property, and, also, to put up retaining walls, so as to prevent the pavement being damaged. The report of the Foreman of Works was read., It called the Council’s attention to a quantity of gorse growing on Brittan Terrace, belonging to Mr Parkinson. Councillor Chalmers drew the Council’s attention to the letter written by Mr Parkinson’s agent, asking for exemption from the by-laws.

Councillor Grubb considered that all gorse ought to be removed. Councillor Chalmers moved, that Mr Parkinson be allowed exemption, so far as regarded his fence, provided it be properly trimmed, but with respect to the gorge spoken of in the report that It be removed. Councillor Chalmers drew the Council’s attention to the gorse growing on Messrs Hargreaves’ and Nalder’g land; the notice to remove the same had not been complied with. It was resolved that notices be served forthwith.

His Worship said that his attention had been called to a quantitity of gorse growing near Mr Grange’s forge. It was resolved to have the same and all the gorse within the limits of the borough cut down. The Foreman of Works reported that the Pump in Oxford street was out of repair. It was resolved to put the same in proper repair forthwith. .

Accounts, amounting to £7 4s lod, were passed for payment.

The following tenders for valuing the town were opened -.—Mr S. C. Farr, £4O ; Mr H, Dunsford, £SO. On the motion of Councillor Grubb, seconded by Councillor Young, It was

resolved, that none of the tenders be accepted. • ?v\ Worship said he did not know whether the 'Councillors were willing to to do the valuation themselves, and save the town the expanse. Councillor Chalmers moved, Councillor Young seconded, and it was resolved tha fresh tenders be invited. • The Council then adjourned.
