SIR, —We, the undersigned, request that you will allow yourself to be nominated for the seat in the General Assembly for the Ashley District, and we will endeavour to secure your Election. We are, Yours faithfully, John Russell Geo. Douglas M. O’Connell Jos. Ward Alex. Greig Wm. Barr David Brown Hy. Marten Geo. Winskill James Ashworth H. S. Major H. Lough, sen. Hy. Lough H. Bullwinckle Wm. Forbes Samuel Coleman John Innes Richd. Bristow Wm. Wilson Sami. Wornal Thos. Douglas W. J. Milner John McLean John Lister John Gleaves John Lowcock C. Hadlaar John Stanton - John Crosby To Messrs J. Russell, S. Coleman, and tbs others signing the requisition. Gentlemen, —I have much pleasure in coming forward as a candidate for the Ashley district upon your invitation. My view’s on the questions which principally occupy public attention are shortly these:— I should support the present Government in its scheme for promoting the settlement of the country by means of railways and main roads, but I should oppose the further construction of railways on the expensive system hitherto pursued in Canterbury. With regard to protective duties, 1 am in favour of protecting grain and a few other items of produce, also such industries as may appear likely to be able to maintain their ground without protection after being once established. I should oppose any redaction in the price of waste lands, unless it could be clearly shown that such redaction would lead to a solid as well as a more rapid progress. 1 remain yours truly, A. C. GRAY. North Eowai, Jan. 18,1871. C 9722
