GENTLEMEN,— Having received a requisition which appears to me to evidence a general desire that I should be elected as your Member in the General Assembly, I beg to state my willingness to serve, if elected. My opinions will lead me to give a firm support to the present Government, so long as it continues to assist the universal and just desire for progress. I feel greatly honoured by the confidence you propose to place in me, and promise that if you think fit to elect me, I will do my best to serve the Colony, and not forget the interests of Christchurch. FRENCH, AN EVENING CLASS for the instruction of young men in French, in connection with the Christchurch Academy, will be held every WEDNESDAY EVENING from 7 to 9, commencing on WEDNESDAY, 10th INST. THE objects aimed at by this Association are the preparation of the “ Fboftnium Tenax” in a more marketable state than has hitherto been attained, and the prosecution of a series of carefully-conducted experiments with a view to discover the best method by which the fibre can be rendered more fit for Manufacturing purposes. The Committee invite the co-operation of all parties interested in the growth and production of flax, in furthering the objects of the Association, the importance of which, to the welfare of this province and to New Zealand generally, cannot be over-estimated; it is therefore, with the utmost confidence, they appeal to all classes of the community to assist their efforts with liberality. Donations and subscriptions of members (which have been fixed at £1 Is per annum) may be paid to members of the Committee only, who have been authorised to receive the same. J. A.
