A telegram appeared in the Press yesterday, to the effect that a deputation, consisting of Messrs Solleston,

Hall, and Studholme, waifod on the aacer|ain what bjj» given towards eitendingtne(D»nterbury railways during the prefeijli year. The .telegrain goes on to gay that the O-oreloment stated tney would favourably consider' the question when their Bills l|ad jessed. Without going bo far as to contradict this statement, we may say that its publication is entirely unauthorised and contrary to the wish of the Government, and that if it has any effect at all, it will he adverse to the desired object. In another part of our columns we publish a letter addressed to Mr Eolleston, and forwarded to him on Saturday last. The letter is signed by several persons of standing in Christchurch, and was written with the view of urging his Honor to take steps to obtain assistance from the Government to carry on the railways without unnecessary delay. We are glad to learn that the deputation took action upon the letter so promptly, and, while we trust the result will be favourable, we must confess that it would not be surprising if it were otherwise, as we learn on the best authority that Ministers feel seriously annoyed at the hostile attitude adopted by some of the Oanter- ; bury members.
