Th j barque Maori came up to an anchorage opposite the town yesterday afternoon. The three masted schooner, John Bullock, sailed yesterday afternoon for Sydney. The three-masted schooner, Amateur, cleared the Customs yesterday afternoon, and will sail for Sydney and Newcastle this day. On the arrival of Mr Dean’s boat yesterday from Pnrau, he reported that, when off Stoddart’s Point, he noticed a boat, and that on pulling towards it, found no one in it. He examined the boat, and ascertained that it belonged to a man named Bogers, a fisherman. This man was observed to leave the wharf at Lyttdton yesterday morning, about 9 o’clock, to go fishing, and he polled off in the direction of Ehodes’ Bay. With commendable alacrity, the watermen manned their boats, and proceeded to Bhodes’ Bay to search the beach. About an hour afterwards the missing man arrived in a boat from the head of the bay. It appears that Bogers reached Sandy Bay, and on getting ashore, he fell down in a fit (to which he is subject) and his boat was carried away by the tide. Bogers is a Deal boatman, and is one of the party that came out to this province some years since, he has a large family, and has only this precarious and to him dangerous means of earning a living.

inquiry. An enouiry was held on the wreck of the ketch Folly, at the Re ' id e nt “*8“^ 8 Court yesterday, before G, L. Melliah, Esq-, R.M., C. Dudley, Esq., and Mr G. F. Day, who acted as assessor. Captain Gibson, Har-bour-master, Lyttelton, was present to watch the proceedings, and the following evidence was taken. ~. Magnus Meredith: I was the owner of the ketch Folly, and reside at Lyttelton. 1 believe her registered number was 36,951; her tonnage was 17 tons. She sailed from Lyttelton to Kaiapoi on or about the 26 th inst., with a cargo of coals. Her master’s name was David W. Turner. Her crew consisted of one man besides the captain. I believe she had 25 tons of coal on board. She was capable of carrying 30 tons dead weight in favourable weather to any port on the coast I have seen the remains of her wreck on the beach. I have also seen the body of her master. The vessel was in a perfectly seaworthy state, and well found with anchors and chains. She had three anchors on board when she left Lyttelton. She had one new chain 30 fathoms long, and another chain 30 fathoms long, which I purchased with the vessel. She was surveyed by Captain Dunsford about two months ago, and he granted a certificate that she was able to carry perishable caigo between Otago and Wellington. I believe Messrs Cobb and Sawtell hold the written certificate, as she was surveyed at their request. I had her thoroughly overhauled and repaired about six weeks ago. On Saturday, 21st instant, she was beached in Lyttelton, and two carpenters were employed to stop a leak on the starboard quarter, above her water mark when loaded. The captain was quite competent to take charge of the vessel. She was not insured. I believe that two men with a boat could have saved the men’s lives. If a vessel like her could lie at anchor with a load of coal, a boat could easily have been taken near enough for a line to be thrown to the vessel. I believe that the pilot should have remained at the bar and tried to assist the men, instead of coming to Kaiapoi, for while he was going for assistance the men lost their lives.

George Simmonds: I am master of the schooner Volunteer. I came over the bar about 1.45 p.m. on Friday last. There was a very heavy break on the bar at the time, and the wind was about due nor’-east. When I crossed the bar, I saw the ketch Folly about five miles astern, steering for the bar. When I crossed the bar, it was quite safe for a vessel of the Folly’s description. Ido not think there would be a much heavier sea on the bar when the Folly crossed than when I crossed. The wind died away about the time the Folly crossed the bar, and she had about an hour’s ebb tide to contend with. I consider that two men were ample to navigate a vessel of the Folly’s tonnage. The enquiry was at this stage adjourned till Thursday next, at 11 a.m., for the production of further evidence.
