The ship Matoaka cleared the Customs on Tuesday, and was expected to sail for London last night, the s.s. Gazelle being engaged to tow her outside the heads. ThbM. A. and N.Z. Co.’s steamer Tararua, James Hagley, commander, arrived from Melbourne, via Bluff and Dunedin, at 10.30 a.m. yesterday. She left Hobson’s Bay at 3 p.m. on the 4th, passed Port Phillip Heads at 6 p.m., and cleared Banks Straits at 5 p.m. next day. Experienced southerly winds and cross yeas to the land. Passed the Solander at 6 a.m. on the 9th, and arrived at Bluff Harbour at 11.30; left again at 4.30 p.m., and experienced fine weather, but foggy; arrived at Port Chalmers at 7 a.m. on the 10th; left at 5 p.m. on the 11th, and arrived as above. On her last upward passage to Melbourne, when about a degree west of the Solander, she was caught in a terrific N.W. gale, and was hove-to for forty-five hours, with the sea running mountains high; the remainder of the passage was made against adverse weather.
