CHRISTCHURCH CITY COUNCIL.

Monday, April 26. The weekly meeting was held at seven o’clock. Present: his Worship the Mayor and all the Councillors. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. The Clerk announced the receipts for the week to have been £42 7s 6d, and that the overdraft at the bank was £37 6s lOd. Accounts amounting to £lO5 17s Id were passed and ordered to be paid. Councillor Kuddenklau, on behalf of the Fire Committee, reported that Captain Wilson had, during the day, handed over the Fire Brigade plant to his successor, who said it was all in excellent order. A full report would be submitted at next meeting. The surveyor reported that the ordinary city works, excepting contracts and the clearing of side drains, had given place to those connected with the visit of H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh, and that the labour gang had been employed clearing out side drains and repairing footpaths in St. Asaph, Durham, and Tuam streets, the Papanui and Oxford Terrace, erecting and decorating the tent at the railway station, and erecting the triumphal arches. The report was approved without comment. The reply to the address from the Council to H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh was read and ordered to be recorded in the minute book. A letter was read from Mr W. Harris, acknowledging his appointment to the office of Superintendent of the Fire Brigade. Councillor Jameson referred to the civic reception of H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh during the past week, and considered that the successful manner in which everything had passed off was a source of congratulation to the Council. There bad been thousands of visitors from the country districts, and elsewhere, but not a single accident or objectionable proceeding was recorded. The display of loyalty had been greater than he thought the city capable of making, and the best feature of the reception was the dejeuner given by his Worship the Mayor. Since, there had been other entertainments, and he thought he ought to refer to a rumour abroad to the effect that his Worship had not been invited to the dinner at the Club ; the truth or otherwise of which, he would like to be made acquainted with. The Mayor said he did not receive an invitation.

Councillor Jameson considered that such i being the case, it was a great slight not only to his Worship, of whose hospitality the gentlemen giving the dinner had partaken, but also to the Council. He further remarked upon it at some length, and after referring to the readiness with which the various public bodies had come forward to assist the Council in giving H.R.H. a proper reception, moved a vote of thanks to them. Councillor Sheppard seconded the motion, and supported what Councillor Jameson had expressed regarding the club dinner. After some further observations from Councillors, the motion was carried. The Mayor referring to the dub dinner, said be deemed that if it were admissible for him to have been invited, the omission was entirely an overnight. He had never thought of it u a slight by the club. On the motion of Councillor Duncan, it

wm resolved to let the site set apart for them by the Government for a cattle market for grazing purposes. Mr W. Harris, Superintendent of the Fire Brigade, was appointed Chief Fire Inspector, vice Captain Wilson, resigned. Votes of thanks to the employes of the Council for the energetic manner in which they had carried out the measures of the Council in connection with the Royal visit were passed, and the Council adjourned.
