DISTRICT PRIZES.

The firing for the Provincial prizes being now concluded, we are able to give the liet ot winners, together with the names of those who have qualified themselves to represent Canterbury at the Colonial prize meeting to be held in Otago during next month. In doing so, we may take the opportunity of in some measure comparing the results of the shooting with that of last year. Unfortunately; we find it considerably inferior; the highest prize taker on this occasion being two points below his compeer of 1868, whilst the general average shows a falling off of three points per man. The first battalion - Christchiirch, I.yttelton, and Heathcote corps -have also suffered the two first prizes to be carried off by the Northern battalion, although they counter-balance it by taking two-thirds of the whole number of prizes, whilst they send the greatest number of representatives to the Otago competition. On the whole, the honours are pretty equally divided, considering the greater number of men in the first battalion, and it may not be very difficult to accouut for the falling off in the scoring. High winds have been unusually prevalent during the present year's competition, while the Christchureli and Lyttelton corps were, up to a short time back, unable to |irnctice for want of a range; and further, the present Bite and arrangement of the targets, by being less perfect than the old one, led to very material mistakes and unpleasantness on the first day's firing. Of individual prize winners, we are glad to note that whilst many of the old cracks maintain their position,.several new men bave takun a high position 1n the list. The following is a correct list of winners. The various ties having been decided accord-

ing to Wimbledon rules, namely, the highest scorer at the longest range being declared the best shot, or if a tie there also, by comparing the shots in j n > eraß o jj er 0 f twos, the flrjt gaining an advantage to be the winner. ■ £ Private J. The first eight on the list are the qualified adult representatives of the province for the Otago competition, whilst for the Cadets, Corporal Dwis's 24 points will represent the High School Corps j Lance-Corporal Brunsden's 20 points, the St. John's; and Sergeant Fisher, 18, the Cavalry. The adult representatives are selected as follows:—The highest Bcorer for the district prizes in the province, one for every thirty men scoring above thirty five points (only forty succeeded in doing this, so that only one man could go), and one for every hundred, or fractional part of a hundred, above fifty volunteers enrolled in the province (there being 683 in all the corps, this gave seven representatives.) Total in all, eight men.
