THE WELD CUP.

The first competition for the Silver Cup given by Mrs Weld, took place at the new rifle range, near Heathcote Valley, yesterday, and contrary to expectation, it was carried off. The day was most unfavourable to rifle shooting, a strong variable north-west wind blowing all day. Mr Weld's cup, it will be remembered was fired for several times with less stringent conditions, but without success, and this together with the want of a range, hav ingfor weeks past prevented practice being indulged in, renders Mr Maddisou's achievement one of which he may bo proud. He only passed the minimum score by one point, and this, too, with his last shot. The cup will be publicly presented at the first favourable opportunity. The following are tho scores, the position being any, with seven shots at each range; but those not making forty points at the first two ranges, to be disqualified from further competition.
