GENERAL ASSEMBLY.
[by electric, telegraph,]
Friday, September 18,
The division on Mr, Pox's "No Confidence" motion was brought on unexpectedly. After Mr Gallagher had spoken—about ten o'clock—the usual adjournment for twenty minutes was proposed by the chairman of committees—Mr Carleton. Some members objected, when the chairman put the main question, Mr Barff asked for information, when the main question \yas again put in Parliamentary phraseology, and a few voices were given. When it was understood that the " No confidence " motion had been disposed of—Messrs Pox, Stafford, and the leaders of parties having meantime returned to the House—there was an uproar. ■■■
A long, excited, and acrimonious discussion ensued, Mr Bell and others declaring that they had intended to speak, and reproaching the Government for not replying to certain charges implied by lobby rumours. Mr Pox challenged the Government to go to division on the "No Confidence" issue, and the Government replied that what had been done could not be undone.
A division was taken on the question, "That the report of the Committee be agreed to," with the following result Government:—Ball, Carleton, Wilson, Atkinson, Paterson, Barff, Potts, Hall, Haultain, Farmer, Wood, Gallagher, Bunny, Kenny, Hull, Mervyn, W.
