Wellington, June 19, 7.55 p.m. There is no bad news from Patea. A public meeting has been held there, at which the settlers were invited to enrol themselves for self-protection. A public meeting at Wanganui urged the Government to support M'Donnell, and not allow any interference by Commissioners. Several Maori chiefs spoke. They said, it is thought sarcastically, that they would not go out and fight at once, but follow the European custom and go to Wellington and consult the Governor.
A public meeting at Wellington, last night, condemned the new Executive for not cloaing with Owen for the Slip contract.
