LYTTELTON MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

Monday, Jan. 27. The Council met at the usual hour. Present : Mr Merson (chairman), Messrs Willcox, "Ward, Balestiee, England, Allwright, Chalmers, and Mutton.

The minute* of former meeting having be?n read and confirmed, the Clerk read the following correspondence : From the Secretary for Public Works, stating that a pathway would be made fmm the Hallway Station to Norwich Quay, in compliance with a request to that effect made by the Council. From the Provincial Secretary, inquiring whether the Chairman would act on a committee to be formed for the entertainment of Lord Lyttelton and Mr Sefe. The Chairman stated that, in accordance with the request contained in the letter, he had attended a meeting of the committee held that day at the Government Buildings, of which a programme was drawn up. From Mr J. Collier, asking leave to remove earth from Section 42, in London street. The request was granted, subject to the ; work being carried out under the supervision of the foreman of works. From a large number of ratepayers and town residents, offering their services as a hook and ladder brigade, if the Council would provide the necessary equipments. The Chairman said this was a subject of paramount importance, and one which ought to meet with the warmest support of the Council. From the very numerous list of names appended, to the document, he thought that the subject would be well and spiritedly taken up by all classes of the cimmunity, and the brigade when formed would be of incalculable assistance in case of fire. But there should be some data before them from which the Council could form some idea of the probable cost of equipment, &c, for a brigade similar to the one proposed to be established, and as he saw that Mr Boper, a gentleman who had taken great interest in all matters relating to the brigade, was present, be would ask him to give the Council some idea of the probable cost. Mr Hopersaid he thought that the price of the requisite machinery, &c, would amount to about £IOO. He wUhed it to be understood that the services of the brigade would be voluntary, no payment being r. quired for their time, thus reducing the cost considerably. He had called on one or two Insurance Companies, and had received promises of support from i hem. After some further discussion, it was resolved that Messrs Balestiee, Kngland, and Willcox, form a committee to confer with the persons signing the letter. A letter was read from Mr E. Griffith, stating that as Mr .1. Grah.im had not taken up his carting contract, that he was willing to perform the work at the prices mentioned in his tender. Mr Mutton moved that the tender of Mr H. Salt he accepted, which was seconded by Mr England. An amendment to the effect that Mr Griffiths' tender be accepted, was moved by Willcox, seconded by ,Mr Allwright and carried on a division. A communication was read from Mr W. H. Foley, respecting a site for the exhibition of his menagerie, and offering to give a donation to any local institution the Council might deem fit. It was resolved that Mr Foley be allowed the use of the ground applied for, and that the promised donation be given to the Colonists' Society. The Chairman then read the report of the committee appointed on the application of Mr Cole, whi-h was received. The usual weekiy report of the Custodian of the Bathing Mied was read: No. of bathers during the week, males, 133; females, 79.
